Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun

for me, the start of a passion and love for all things Asian, the period i'd not really visited or played war game wise since Shogun, since this game, everything from movies to TV series goes into a different place for me, this game fuelled that passion and direction and to me is something one day i'd like to see a remake of, in a later or new engine, as it plays so well, over 1k hours on the site version and same again in testing, things from here only got better, but this for me is where this period really took a turn in the right direction for me as it lit a flame that still burns, as before this, there was only Arnhem, now there's a whole new area to fight over in a period i knew little about. so would i recommend it, if you haven't got this one by now, then your not a war gaming collector or play everything type of war gamer, so need not ask

Wokeness in modern games made me come back to appreciate games like this more. I bought all 4 games but not getting deep into them yet, currently my favs go in this order: 1. Pike and Shot - Best performance, guns 2. Sengoku Jidai - Good performance, interesting period 3. FoG2: Medieval - Good performance, best GUI 4. FoG2 - mid performance, don't notice anything different from medieval

What looked like a fun strategy entry into one of my favorite time periods was quickly dashed by how poorly it is in implementation. Very little strategy, very little troop control, and very little teaching how any of the game interacts with itself in the tutorials. The most annoying feature is your troops ignoring an entire battlefield and any orders to pursue routed enemies off map for 3+ turns. Sadly wasn't even worth the $7 on sale and is one of less than 5 games I have ever refunded on steam.

Yeah this game is rough. Not recommended even if you like the timeline. You really, REALLY, need to like VERY slow combat that depend heavily (and I mean HEAVILY) on RNG, clunky mechanics and aggravating results to find enjoyment in this game. It is very niche, and even if you DO like those niches the game is still very rough and does not aged that well. It's quite bland, and aside from the historical units you can find from the countries involved it's very... sterile? Say you're playing as the Oda, the game doesn't really lean on historical specialty of the Oda Clan, like fielding numerous professional Ashigaru (or if they did I could not for the life of me tell you the differences between the Ashigarus aside from their unit numbers per unit banners) and/or fielding a good number of Gun Ashigarus, or even the Takeda favored cavalries army that made them so fearsome. In the campaign clash between them, they're all basically the same so the battle became positional and which one of you got luckier, like playing a strategy game plain oatmeal. I played this game rather briefly even then there's no actual ending it's like playing a long boardgame, I tried to enjoy this game, but the combat or the pacing overall felt slow it's not a bad game, but it's definitely not my type that's all I can say, I might of may enjoyed it more if there was an actual board game version of this maybe.
