Shifter (2024)

I thought it was cool.

Shifter is a short 2D puzzle-platformer that makes a strong impression through a clever dimension-switching mechanic and an intentionally unsettling atmosphere. Developed by Stolen Portals and published by DigiPen Institute of Technology, the game originated as a student project, which helps explain its compact scope and experimental character. Instead of stretching a straightforward concept across an unnecessarily long campaign, it focuses on exploring mysterious ruins, overcoming environmental puzzles, and learning how two contrasting dimensions can completely change the path ahead. The central mechanic revolves around shifting between light and dark versions of the world. Portals allow the player to move between these dimensions, and doing so can alter the environment in ways that open new routes or provide solutions to obstacles. A location that initially appears impossible to cross may become manageable after switching dimensions and examining how the surroundings have changed. This gives the platforming a satisfying puzzle component, encouraging observation and experimentation rather than relying exclusively on reflexes.
