Shiitake Showdown

"Shiitake Showdown" is a dead PvP shooter with no players, because, well, the graphics are middling and there's a million better free FPS games you could be playing with much better graphics. Seen how popular Counter-Strike 2 is? You know how much [i]better[/i] a game has to be to compete with games like that? Yeah... developers often fall into the trap of thinking that PvP is an acceptable substitute for content, but it isn't. The vast majority of PvP games fail. I'm talking 90% plus. They don't go viral, they die. And with no single player content, there's no legacy for the game to keep players interested. This is a classic, textbook case where we can see the results of that kind of flawed game design. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming idustry, and should be applauded. Shiitake Showdown takes the familiar foundations of a multiplayer arena shooter and gives them an eccentric fantasy identity built around serpents, hostile fungi, firearms, and elemental powers. Developed and published by Chrono Owl Studios, it clearly favors personality and accessible competitive action over military realism. The conflict revolves around the Serpents and the parasitic Myconids, creating a bizarre but memorable backdrop for matches. The premise is intentionally playful, yet it gives the combat enough context to make the setting feel more distinctive than a collection of disconnected multiplayer arenas. The core gameplay is centered on first-person PvP battles where positioning, movement, weapon selection, and accuracy all matter. Its arsenal covers different engagement ranges, encouraging players to adapt instead of relying on one weapon in every situation. Shotguns are naturally suited to close encounters, while longer-range weapons such as sniper rifles reward patience and precision. This game is a diamond in the rough. It is extremely fun to play (especially with friends), and with consistent updates and proper marketing, I have no doubt this game could be huge. Unfortunately, I think the game has been abandoned by the developers. RIP

Probably the best game on Steam, hands down.
