Silver Daze

Yes, I backed this game on Kickstarter. Yes, I was a playtester and got the game early. And yes, I’ve played for over 114 hours before it even released, but I can assure you that this is an unbiased review. I’ll try to keep this short [strike]I failed[/strike], as reviews aren’t my specialty. Silver Daze is a turn based JRPG about collecting cards, saving the world, and the challenges of growing up and finding the courage to move forward. The game’s combat has you fight using cards, of which there are over 280 of. Cards are obtained from defeating enemies, finding them in chests, and buying them. Any character can equip any card, though the card’s EP cost (this game’s MP) will be cut in half if equipped to the character whose color matches the card. Battles, which you’ll do a lot of, involve managing your EP and your Aggro. Every card uses EP, but you have a special attack that restores it, though is most powerful when your EP is at 50%. Aggro is the stat used to determine which character the enemies will attack. Silver Daze is a truly remarkable indie project, especially for players who enjoy experimenting with combat builds and skill-based puzzles. If you love equipping different skills, testing synergies, and creatively solving combat challenges, this game is tailor-made for you. The story has genuine moments of poignancy and solid teenage-drama writing. While I’m not usually story-focused, I found myself invested in the characters and genuinely hoping they would resolve their conflicts in a non-tragic way. Where the game really shines for me is in its endgame content. The developer has crafted a series of challenges that reward exploration, careful team composition, and thoughtful synergy among the hundreds of skills available. One of my great joys was combing through the skill list to find just the right combination to defeat a tricky enemy or solve a combat puzzle—sometimes rediscovering a forgotten skill that turns out to be perfect. Tracking down final cards, enemies, and items is satisfying, especially since the developer designed ways to reduce the randomness of this process. It's a nice game, somewhat ambitious story, but it very much over stay it's welcome with far too many and too long dungeons and combat that doesn't evolve much after the start.

All of the charm of old-style games with a storyline any of us can find pieces of themselves in. Some portions take some grit/patience to get through, but arriving to the game's end is well worth your time getting there. Plus, the music absolutely rocks. Once you get used to the battle mechanic logic, building up synergies is a blast.

Another game I've bought for the soundtrack... ...another decision devoid of regret. ...also my sister ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ *LOVES* this game.

A solid RPG experience. The solo dev clearly put a lot of love into this one. Sure, there are things I could nitpick (maps, battle system, etc.) but ultimatley the story, characters, and their relationships with eachother are what kept me playing to the end. The music and SFX also hit hard! So if you are looking for a nice "coming of age" story, that hits those retro RPG vibes, then you should definitely check this one out!
