Steel Century Groove

This game got on my radar from some TikTok clips a while back and I finally got around to playing it. It lives up to that hype it got at the time. Just a shame it looks like it didn't do well commercially. The rhythm portion of the game is super fun. It can have some challenge if you want, but it's pretty straight forward for the average player. Being able to use custom music throughout the story is a great feature as well, even though the default music in the game is solid as well. The story is what really caught me off guard. I played the demo, and enjoyed what I saw of the story but it really takes off beyond what you can see there, and it isn't your standard hero/monster adventure story. Definitely recommend.

Let me start by saying this game is AMAZING! Down to the story, the detail in the Tenzerks, the environment, the story, the character customization, and the way the game plays itself; everything is perfect. I truly believe this game is the best game I have played this year, and dare I say even the last few years. I absolutely ADORE the characters and the story that unfolds as you explore the map. I love seeing what all of the NPCs have to say when you interact with them. The music in the game is also fantastic, and the fact you have the ability to add your own custom songs to it too just further adds to the game. I've played two full playthroughs of the game already, all the way through, and I've been working through my third one now as well. It is so fun to replay, and with the randomness of what songs are chosen for the battles makes it easy to keep playing through it over and over again. Though I may be biased simply because I adore the game as much as I do, I have greatly enjoyed going through the story two times already and further absorbing the information provided, and even noticing little things I hadn't before gaining the knowledge I have currently. Good game with good story Gameplay: [10/10] I really like it! Reminds me of one of the Japanese arcade rhythm games! Music Map Generation: [9/10] Great! Songs that have a notable beat to it, the game can detect its bpm and offset pretty easily. I think its the only game that has such a good beat detection. Though it has issues with some songs, its still better than anything else I have encountered! And the even supports osu-files! Story: [8/10] Not predictable and good! The story is not intentionally clear at the beginning and unpacks itself during the gameplay. There are some issues regarding the importance and standing of the main villain. [spoiler] Alan doesn't feel like a main villain for me. Through the whole story, he is depicted as the inventor, like Elon Musk-y. But he feels so distant and just not present. Yes, you can fight against him because he is one of the Principal Pilot. But then he feels equal to the other Principal Pilots, losing his importance in the story. He doesn't actively prevent us to reach our goal. There are fights on the maps but they are more like side fights and don't contribute to the story at all. I like Rythm games. I like Mecha. So when i saw stuff from instagram and was sold. Very cool that you can use your own music in story mode and its not confined to arcade mode. What i can tell of the story is not much yet. Something tells me the dev likes Evangelion, just a hunch.
