Swords & Bones 5

Not quite finished but this fifth entry in the series is shaping up to be my favorite so far. Probably the toughest one and I appreciate the increased difficulty level. The general 2D hack and slash gameplay coupled with finding the secret trophy tucked away is a winning formula. My absolute favorite is the new cheese item which shrinks the main character so you have to navigate smaller corridors but can't fight any enemies. Really spices up the levels and forces you to go into evasion mode. Great work as always from SEEP!

All of the Swords & Bones games are fun and worth the price. I would have to say that this one was probably my least favorite. I did still like it but it was a bit more frustrating at times than the others. Many of the enemies that shoot at you don't always stop shooting when you hit them, making it very hard to kill them without taking damage. And I didn't really care for the mouse running through the swinging ax gauntlet parts that much. Overall, it is still a worthy sequel. I did 100% it in about 5 hours.

I liked swords & bones 1 and 4 but I dont like this entry. I'm looking for a cheap casual game to chill with and this one cranks up the difficulty out of nowhere. It's not difficult in a satisfying way either, the player is asked to perform tricky maneuvers like double jump dash over spikes with eye laser monsters when that ability wasn't used until the end of the game. The arrow powers are all slow, clunky and awkward. Also how the heck do you get the trophy on dark fortress 4? That switch does nothing! The puzzles are one-off problems that dont build on anything before and are confusing. Plus the music for Dark Fortress level is so repetitive and annoying I needed to disable the sound and you cant just turn off the music. This series as a whole is low budget jank tbh but were simple chill fun so I enjoyed them anyways BUT if you take away the chill fun and replace it with extreme difficulty well thats a recipe for a bad time brother.

I don't know if diminishing returns (each episode got less reviews than the previous one) ultimately pushed this to be the last [b]Swords & Bones[/b], but in-game, nothing says the curse that allows for a demonic invasion every 500 years is going to be vanquished once and for all, even though the very last screen is a thanks for completing the saga. While of no bearing on the gameplay, it's at least nice that, besides the big bad, the bosses are mutated and misguided people, have a defeat animation with them returning to human form, and show up afterwards. The mouse-man Basil (heh) is very similar to the rogue of the third game, including an evasive dash, but with an attack reach comparable to the mage of the fourth—best of both worlds. A notable difference from previous games is how progression is gated by the acquisition of specific upgrades from the shop: in other [b]S&B[/b] games you could pass all stages normally and needed upgrades to reach the trophies in some of them, but here it's not possible. SEEP always comes through with amazing retro inspired games and this one is another great one. With these greedy companies that continue to cut corners and are about to charge over 80 dollars for subpar products made with the sole intent to sell micro-transactions... Indies like SEEP need to be supported.

This franchise is basic but nice, when the protagonist is not a horny seductress. Not perfect, but a good afternoon of platforming gameplay!
