"The Dream of Shadowlands" is a top-down RPG series inspired by the RPGMaker horror niche. It features art assets that were drawn traditionally with ink and paper, and a retro style based on 90's anime. Some of the art, namely the animated cutscenes, are done using traditional cel ink and paint!

✦ AI summary
Players praise this episode as a solid continuation that expands the world-building, atmosphere, and character relationships with engaging banter and meaningful interactions, plus satisfying combat mechanics where fear affects your strength. The visuals, music, story, and puzzle design are highlighted as standout elements, though some note that combat remains straightforward and enemy encounters can feel like minor nuisances rather than genuine threats.
The first part is free, so give that one a try if you're interested. This chapter expands on the earlier established story and setting. This part is somewhat bleak, sad, and perhaps a little scary, but other themes include brightness, hopefulness, and a touch of dark humor. The protagonists are developing, and their relationship is changing, bit by bit. Their interactions are a little more interesting, in my opinion, and a bit of banter even begins to develop between them. Longer and larger than the first game, with a couple new puzzle mechanics and items. Puzzles are mostly straightforward, but sometimes you have to churn your noggin just a touch. Combat is largely unchanged; if you're looking for a thrilling battle experience, you may be in the wrong place. The enemies can be a nuisance, but can be avoided without much difficulty. Very endearing artstyle and character design, with a few short (but sweet) traditionally animated cutscenes. Voice acting is inconsistent, with performances ranging between amateurish or unremarkable, to interesting and pleasing to the ear. If any prominent voices bother you, however, it can be disabled. I like the music; it's atmospheric and suits the…5 found this helpful
This series is a breath of fresh air in the top-down horror genre. You have a companion and have frequent conversations about the world and your situation with them. This makes both you and him feel very alive. You even meet with others during the journey, some pleasant, others a lot less so. You're not just running away from foes! Rina, the protagonist is very capable and can fight off most opponents. Your companion has a "parry" ability, and can stun enemies for you. Combat is quick and fluid. As you defeat foes, your "fear" of them lessens, and in turn you become stronger. Alternatively if they overwhelm you, you fear them more and become weaker. It's a very unique mechanic, but luckily not something you have to worry too much about. The world oozes with atmosphere! This second episode focuses on worldbuilding and sets up the latter parts of the story. Every nook and cranny has a story to tell, and if you're observant enough in spotting these, your characters will comment on them as well. The game has light puzzle solving and adventure game elements, but it's never too difficult to figure out what you're supposed to do if you pay attention. I'd say play time is 3-5 hours on …3 found this helpful
Great continuation of the previous episode, this one provides a lot of interesting lore about the world. If you liked episode 1 you'll like this too. I'm looking forward to future entries, this series really deserves more attention.3 found this helpful
This game is honestly a gem. The 90's anime visuals, the music, the story, and the simple yet satisfying game play make it a real treat. This episode is not only longer than the first, but has more mechanics and puzzles. The story is also expanded and more context is given. If you enjoyed the first episode, this is a must play! The story continues and changes with a great ending sequence. The voice acting is solid. I can't get over the nostalgic visuals this game has. This series is definitely one for you to get into.3 found this helpful
