The Great Villainess: Strategy of Lily

I want to like this game. The Villainess Rose of Versailles theme is a personal favorite and that is why I have to be harsh. First off the Main Character is just a meat head. A good Villainess should be plotting out everything. Not here. Lily (Wink Wink) our other female protag is just along for the ride. The other characters are not that memorable. All of this could have been forgiven... but the game play punishes strategy. The faster you beat an area the more you fall behind in levels for the next act. By the 3rd act I was 5 levels behind and had the choice of pulling my armies back and power leveling for an hour or fighting tough up hill battles where if the 2 Main Characters die, its game over and its gave over a lot. I'm afraid this is where I gave up. Great theme, okay characters, but the actual game play punishes you for doing good. Thanks for reading.

The art and character design are carrying this hard. The game itself is by no means bad. It's a reasonably enjoyable experience, as long as you're playing correctly. But at its best the gameplay isn't amazing, and it frequently turns into a complete slog. The major problem is that everything is very defensive - all units heal if they're in a friendly base and enemy forts spit out new troops every single turn. There's a level system so sometimes the only thing to do is just wait for these endless troops to grant enough XP for a proper invasion. The game will occasionally throw a curveball at you and open up multiple fronts; this can be annoying, but it forces you to use all of your troops instead of just letting Scarlet steamroll everything. I didn't think the story was amazing, but it was a fun adventure and worth reading. Overall this is a good game and worth playing. As long as you're playing correctly. There are two ways to proceed - have Scarlet capture enemy commanders and force them into your army, or murder everyone. Murdering everyone is just straight up wrong, and no I don't mean morally. I dont write a lot of reviews, even for games I enjoy I had to for this game, because I love the concept of playing the villains in stories, and "The Great Villainess" did that beautifully. There's a bunch of funny scenes, and even scenes that inspired me to draw them as some of my own characters. A bunch of things I considered funny enough as reactions and watched my friends groan as I sent pictures of that instead of an actual reply haha. As far as gameplay. I've 100%'d the Achievements, and while it's nothing fancy I've gotten three of the five endings. I fell in love with the characters on the "Good" ending, and sure, the power scaling makes you want to cry in the final act, it also forced me to grind all of my units to 40, and even then I was still struggling. So I consider myself more on the "Casual" side of gaming. I love strategy games, but I fall prey easily to what I consider the "Easy" route. This game lures you into that false security, but it does not hand hold you if you dont try. Still though I pushed through because truthfully? It was a skill issue.
