Wargroove

It's basically Advance Wars with a fantasy setting, unfortunately a significant downgrade in a number of ways. Rather than have characters who change the ways the units work, units are fully interchangeable and each character gets a single power tethered to a hero unit. making characters much less impactful than Advance Wars. As a direct result the gameplay is very bland, as the only mechanical difference between any faction/character is a single power occasionally activated on the hero unit, which is itself mechanically identical to any other hero unit except through use of the power. Other downgrades include AI that entirely ignores fog of war instead of using spotters and an entire roster of characters less likable than AW's. It's better than nothing, but this one falls short of its inspirations.

I like turn-based strategy a lot, but this game was frustrating to play. It felt like I was being pushed into only being able to win by being boringly cautious. I prefer strategy games where there are at least a few different valid approaches and you have to find what works best for your style. This game felt more like having to figure out the one singular approach that would win, and that approach is super boring and takes forever and then tells you that actually you didn't do well enough and took too long.

I had fun but I wish there was more variance between the heroes and the factions, like exclusive units in each factions or different stats for each units and heroes. Right now, the different factions just feel like different skins for the same units.

Wargroove was fun for me for a week or so, but the story had little going on that would make me want to return back to the game, and the gameplay itself isn't much special either. Still is a solid experience for just a simple game in the genre if its on sale, and maybe I'll return to the game a while later.

Mostly played the coop DLC and had a lot of fun - despite some missions beeing annoyingly hard.
