Reviewing (mostly) every game (or DLC) in my library, part 589: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆ (9/10) Before there was [i]Fallen Hero[/i] ("FH"), there was [i]The Hero Unmasked![/i] I don't mean to compare the two to bring either game down; no, I want to point out the similarities between the two. While [i]The Hero Unmasked![/i] is FH's older, happier brother; both games feature superheroes and villains, focus on duplicity, and well. Accept a player who believes in Hoe-ism™️ I want to gaslight and romance all the characters I can, basically. And that's what this game does! [i]The Hero Unmasked![/i] has a fun, bold set-up. You're a simple civilian—except you work for a famous TV show, and you're engaged to marry a mayor, who is quite literally the perfect spouse. However, some super bad dudes capture the city's greatest hero, the Swashbuckler, and reveal their identity. The Swashbuckler, to your shock, is actually your twin sibling! Well, plot twist to the plot twist: because you guys are ~so~ similar, everyone thinks your sibling is you. As a result, you're forced to take up their mantle and go along with the charade, so no one knows the all-mighty Swashbuckler has been kidnapped by some l…

The Hero Unmasked is a classic CYOA game for me, one of the first I've ever played. It holds a special place in my heart and is relatively well-written. Part of me feels like this should be at least two books to better flesh things out as the last two chapters feel rushed but I can also understand not wanting to risk the pacing of the earlier parts of the story. Overall a good read and a decent game, give it a go. + I like the characters. They feel unique, each with their own goals, personalities and relationships to others. They're not as explored in-depth as other CYOAs (especially those that span multiple books) but what's there was enough for me to enjoy who they were. + It does genuinely feel like your choices have an impact on the goings on of the story. From [spoiler]who allies with you, who gets jailed, how you tackle situations, the outcomes of you winning or losing an encounter, etc.[/spoiler] It doesn't feel too railroady and makes replaying it quite satisfying. + I do appreciate the stylistic choices made throughout the game from commenting on your hero's name depending on what it is in relation to the twin or other characters to the comic book style preview for peop…

I have no idea why my playtime count for this is so inflated, but my playthrough was only about two ish hours long. It's.. okay. It's well written and pretty interesting, but a little short. I've definitely played a lot better. Don't pick this up unless it's on sale, even at it's current price I think it's a tad too expensive.

I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. This is an incredibly solid piece of interactive fiction that managed to exceed my expectations. My first playthrough took about 4 hours, which felt like the perfect length for a short, focused experience. However, I've clearly only scratched the surface. The replay value is immense. There is a sheer number of choices ranging from varied dialogue options to combat approaches. Speaking of combat, while the game relies on stat-based checks, it never feels predictable. The action sequences often feature unexpected developments. The writing itself is engaging, polished, and possesses a great sense of humor. The characters are another highlight. Both the love interests and the supporting cast have distinct personalities. The romance subplots are so well-integrated that they never overshadow the main plot. In fact, I liked them so much I wouldn't have minded a bit more. If you're looking for a superhero story with replay value and humor, this is a must-play.

I enjoyed reading through "The Hero Unmasked!" for the most part, but I didn’t like that there were many situations where your skills could not be put to use, no matter the stats you’ve invested in, and would, as such, lead to failures. But the interesting romances and setting more than made up for it, and I found myself replaying parts of the game many times until I got the ending I wanted, and I had a lot of fun. (6/10)
