The Last Chronomancer

Very good, highly recommend if you're itching for a classic turn based RPG! Lots of indie devs like to SAY they take influence from the greats like Final Fantasy 6 or Chrono Trigger, but it's usually a bunch of hooey and their games don't feel like they understood what made those games fun at all. But Guld actually gets it, and this feels like a 90s RPG of yore. FF6 especially.

This game is pretty. It's clear that every aspect has been carefully crafted and given deliberate attention by the developer. It feels human and not AI.

The Last Chronomancer — 10/10 168 hours in, and I'm still going. I have been playing RPGs since the days when you had to blow into the cartridge. Final Fantasy raised me. Chrono Trigger rewired how I thought a story could be told. Final Fantasy IV and VI are the two I keep going back to, decades later, because they got something right that a lot of bigger-budget games since have not. The Last Chronomancer is the first game in a long time that made me feel the way those games did. It earns the comparison I don't say "this is like Chrono Trigger" lightly. Plenty of indie RPGs put on the 16-bit costume and hope nostalgia does the rest. This one doesn't coast. It sits in the same room as Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger and holds its own, and it does it with the specific warmth of IV and VI — the sense that the party matters, that the world has weight, that something is genuinely at stake. From the art to the music, every detail oozes with that beloved old-school charm that pulled me right back into the golden age of gaming. What truly stands out is how much depth this game packs under its nostalgic surface. The need for multiple playthroughs to unlock all the endings and play a route as each hero adds an engaging layer of replayability that keeps the experience fresh and exciting. Each run reveals new twists and extra story beats that make you eager to dive back in. I have a long way to go on this title before I've finished it, but four hours in I think I'm safe to vouch for its quality. This is a big game, daunting at times, but it presents a narrative that has been worth following and a battle system with quite a bit of depth without being overwhelming. The story feels very much like I'm following a tabletop roleplaying game, with both the strengths and weaknesses that come with that. Early on you're given a choice of a character to follow, who effectively becomes your player surrogate, and while you get to experience their introduction and get a better glimpse at the context of their story, the other characters join you with much less fanfare, leading to this sensation that they're sorta along for the ride, in the same way that the player characters in DnD get sorta thrust into a situation together before you can really get to know your fellow players. I found the introduction very clunky in this regard, but after the growing pains subside it becomes a smoother experience (although currently I don't think characters are the game's strong suit).
