Players are deeply divided on this game. Those who appreciate it praise the exceptional story as among the best in gaming, beautiful environments, and engaging cinematic presentation, particularly highlighting the father-daughter narrative. However, critics point out significant technical issues including poor console porting, long load times, frame rate problems, and janky controls, while complaining that core gameplay consists mostly of tedious stealth mechanics, resource scavenging, and simple environmental puzzles rather than meaningful interaction.
A poor console port with tedious gameplay. Long load time, framerate spikes, janky controls, but I guess that's what happens. What you actually spend your time on is roughly broken down as: 50% sneaking and stealth-killing very stupid enemies in a sort of stupidly tedious puzzle, 20% painstakingly scavenging every corner for ammo and supplies, 10% bad environment "puzzles" to move a obvious box, find a ladder, turn on a generator, etc. 10% Active combat that was probably OK on a console 10 years ago, but it feels really janky on PC today. (Will be higher if you're bad at stealth.) 10% Story! The story is fantastic, possibly the best story in a video game and worthy of mention for all literature/movie art. The landscapes and level details are very beautiful and original. You will not see the same reused generic posters, graffiti, or furniture everywhere like many games... the level details are bespoke and it feels like it could be a real world. That could be worth all the janky tedium of the gameplay. BUT, we have the The Last of Us TV series, which is a very well written, well acted, and faithful version of the game's story. Furthermore, some specific characters of the TV se…
