About The Pale City
A world where children aren’t born—they crawl out of tunnels in the ground. A lone city, beneath the gaze of a silent god, home to strange cults who eat the dead. The Pale City is the story of a mercenary hired to find the last, most powerful artifact of a sorcerer who disappeared lifetimes ago. But the search pits him against powerful people in hidden places, towards a secret buried somewhere in terrible darkness.

Pretty much unheard of game that kinda blew me away. The gritty, grim atmosphere is complemented by a remarkably relatable protagonist and characters that live on and even enjoy themselves - despite all that is wrong with this game's world. Speaking of which, the world of The Pale City is one of the most intriguing and unique settings I've encountered - steeped in mystery and given just the right amount of flesh to keep you thinking about it. The dialogue is justified in being called prose here. The developer being an author is a boon and each piece of dialogue is juicy and something to ponder over. There were some typos here and there, but nothing really to complain about. I liked the story quite a bit too. The gameplay is serviceable - it provides a "story mode" for those who don't want to engage with the game's battle system (some of the late-game battles get quite difficult and kinda tedious, honestly). The graphics aren't exactly well designed, but they convey the atmosphere well enough and I really liked the character designs. The soundtrack is genuinely phenomenal - brooding, melancholic in places, peaceful in others, and unsettling/creepy in others yet. Overall, it's a …2 found this helpful
Do not let the bland screenshots fool you, this is one of the more thought provoking and well written games I've had the pleasure of playing recently. The other reviews are 100% correct in their assessment. Even after finishing the game a moment ago, it left me wanting more. What a unique setting. Hey author? Write a book in this setting and I'll buy it.
I don't like dunking on small creators, but this game was in dire need of cleanup. Too many times did characters go on and on, too many times did cutscenes (especially towards the end) take control away from the player. I was recc'd this game from a forum which praised the prose, but it absolutely doesn't make up for the pacing. It's a shame
As it turned out, I do enjoy story driven games, if the story is any good. And this one is. It's so good I was able to stomach the repetitive JRPG combat, which is the single one thing I hate the most in games. Go play it. It's a real treat.
Nice snack of a game.
This game speaks to me on some level that I didn't know existed previously. Its dark and unforgiving. Stuff is expensive, money is hard to come by, healing items are a rarity. Encounters are meaningful, not purely flavorful so its easier to get immersed. Hopefully the dev will make similar stuff in the future as I'm hooked even before ending the game.
