THE SEGMENT TWINS

Segment Twins is a bullet-hell beat-em up with two characters that you can swap between. Gameplay is clearing levels, doing minigames, and fighting boss battles. I really liked the game's approach to swapping characters. Far too often, games with tag-systems end up becoming a constant cycle cycling of characters to min-max their ability cooldowns. However, Segment Twins rewards players for staying with one character by buffing the swapped out character, as well as making character swapping occur on the level itself, with certain areas of the level automatically swapping to one of the twins. Something that I'd to like see in the future is more long-term progression beyond stat buffs. This could include upgrading/unlocking new abilities, a weapon system, etc. I think a more roguelike progression similar to Hades could add lots of replayability to the game. It would also be nice if the leveling system were more nuanced beyond being a "health bar" that limits a character's abilities. Thinking the mindset of long-term progress, maybe leveling beyond level 4 could upgrade the character's abilities, etc.

This game seems like it was made for people with ADD. There is so much stuff going on that it makes it slightly difficult to keep track of everything. Plus I dislike the "cinematic killing event!!!11!!" type stuff when you're trying to just kill enemies.

Great game and extremely underrated, blue 2 red mechanic like Ikaruga

A unique arcade style game with non-stop action and a bit of a whimsical anime art style and story. There isn't exactly a lot to this game, but what's there is great and keeps you active the whole time. It's kind of like a hack-n-slash merged with a MOBA, with an additional "puzzle" element where you can switch the regions of the map to benefit your position. You can also change the combat mode of both characters for different playstyles. On easy and normal difficulties you can probably get through without sweating too much if you have any sort of gamer sense. In a way you can almost kind of mash things and it will work it to some degree. But on hard difficulty the game forces you to actually pay attention to what you're doing and use your brain to set things up. Unlike most games where "difficulty" is just adding more hp and damage to enemies, the enemies on hard become a lot more aggressive and don't let you simply strafe around and mash the dash. I think this is a great indie action game with a nice art style, and it's unfortunate that you have to dig deep into the depths of the Steam catalog to find it.
