The Vagrant

I only played a bit but I need to drop a positive review because these couple of dingalings are making the game look bad. Yes it is similar to Odin Sphere which everyone loves. No it's not "as good". ITS $4 DOLLARS DUMBASS I ran around killed some enemies and checked some stuff out. Already worth $4 and a positive review. The art is beautiful and maybe you played a trillion hours of Odin Sphere. Guess what??? Here's more Odin Sphere!!!!! They didn't just crank this out of the Odin Sphere AI replicator factory. Real people who probably like that game as much as you put months and months of their lives into honoring it and you are a big baby die.

Such a flawed, unpolished game with generic gameplay and serviceable story. Not even hard, just frustrating. But first thing first — I know what you are thinking. You are looking at the screenshot, at our heroine design and asking yourself: is this a THAT type of game? You know, the one you need to play one handed? Good (or bad?) news — it’s not. The Vagrant (or The Sword of the Vagrant, title was changed for some reason) is a 2-D platformer, heavily focused on combat, with hand drawn graphics. It follows the story of Vivian, an mercenary sword-for-hire with special ability called runecraft, that allows using magical powers without actually learning how to cast spells. Her goal is simple — find what happened to her father, who went mad due to some strange curse. But things quickly escalate and she is forced against her will to hunt a few forgotten artifacts and serve some megalomaniac witch. Let’s jump straight into the most important part — and no, I am not talking about Vivian breast, this part we will examine later. Focus, brothers, focus on combat. its a really fun game, very reminiscent of dragons crown (and other vanillaware games), so if you are a fan of those types of games there is no real reason not to pick this on up. The story/main path is very intuitive and easy to understand with plenty of secrets/out of the way exploration. the art is beautiful and the ost is great, truly a gem of a cheap indie game.

It actually plays very smoothly, and the storybook style art is surprisingly well done...but this couldn't obviously more be an Odin Sphere ripoff with far more fan service. There are some significant translation gaffes, enemy AI is profoundly unchallenging, and even if the plot isn't completely cookie cutter, it doesn't cover new or unique ideas, either. That said the price is extremely low, it'll fill a handful of hours, Vivian controls well and the atmosphere has a clear direction, and a lot of the systems seem to work well enough. It's too obviously "directly inspired" for me to give a positive review, but it falls pretty solidly into the "not good not bad" category.
