Waves of Chess

simple concept great execution, fun challenge to test your chess knowledge in a very different context from regular play.

What Joel and Sarah built is really interesting. I thought I was in a basic chess game... until I realized I had multiple queens at start... and then the opponents pieces were getting better and better. What started as an easy chess game ended as a challenging and fun puzzle with a twist. Nicely done!

Bought this game after seeing a friend play it and its instantly addicting, the setting, music, color schemes are all amazing and for most games I just turn the music down and play my own. Its really easy to understand if youve ever played chess and ive maybe played a couple dozen matches against friends my whole life. the souls like aspect makes me want to grind for higher and higher scores and upon getting the game and opening for the first time I couldnt get off for a couple hours. only thing I would change is even though the music is good im obviously biased toward my own taste and prefer something that matches the dark space vibe.

I've never really been into Chess before, but I got recommended to get this game and decided because it was cheap I would get it, and I love it, it's visually beautiful and vibrant, the sounds are smoothing and I've learned how to get better at Chess because of it, fully recommend it!

Wave's of Chess is one of those games where its one core idea, very well polished at a low enough price point to be worth the investment. Basically, you start the game with a full chess board and the opponent has a couple of pieces. Kill the king to carry your surviving board into the next wave against a slightly bigger army. Eventually, your opponent starts replacing pawns with higher tier pieces and you try to survive as long as you can. Between waves you can spend earned credits to revive lost pieces. I suck at chess, but I've been able to make decent progress. Especially early on, the AI is particularly weak and will make some intentionally bad or random moves. This is both a blessing and a curse... many boards are little more than a puzzle... where you always play the same set of moves and always get the same win. Yet, the predictability is less exciting to play... especially on subsequent loops. So, the random stupidity can often ruin your plan. This isn't good or bad, just is. Really, that's the biggest thing holding the experience back for me... predictability. It feels like the "Right way to play" is to repeat the same moves on early boards and survive long enou…

Exactly what I've been looking for from a chess roguelike. I find a lot of paralor game roguelikes go the Balatro route and use chess pieces and movement to play a completely different game, when really i just want to play chess. Waves of Chess however is still fundamentally chess, but with a wave based structure and a handful of fun gimmicks. My only criticism is while the isometric view is very aesthetically pleasing, it does make playing chess quite a bit harder. Overall a great game though!
