Wildheart Gourmet

The only RPG where your main quest is “make soup.”

"Wildheart Gourmet" is a glorified browser/Flash game (I know it's made with the crappy Godot 2D engine which has never been used to make a successful game, but it might as well be Flash) that the developer wants to get paid for. This browser game in exile has you clicking and dragging your mouse around to pretend to "forage" and prepare food by clicking through some web pages, which the game is fundamentally presented as. It's obviously unengaging due to this incredibly primitive interface... remember, we're here on Steam for PC games. For gameplay purposes, because the user interface for this game is mostly just 2D static text/images... it might as well be a web page. It's functionally no different from a browser game. And we all know, Steam isn't here to compete with Chrome and Firefox. If the game can be done in a web browser, it's just not rich or compelling enough to appeal to serious gamers on PC. The game features really lacklustre 2D visuals (does the developer not know 3D graphics became mainstream in the mid-1990s?). Somewhat repetitive, but it's interesting seeing the different uses of various plants and their sources. A more complicated story than you might expect at the start, though.

Wildheart Gourmet is one of the most unusual cozy games I have played because it turns foraging and cooking into the main focus of the adventure. I explore a strange world called the Echo, meet its inhabitants and search for real plants and herbs that can be used as food or medicine. I liked how peaceful the game feels while still giving me a bigger mystery to investigate in the background. The foraging mechanics are the part I enjoyed most. I have to explore different locations, identify useful plants and learn how they can be prepared. The game uses real knowledge about wild foods and herbs, which gives the act of gathering things a little more meaning than simply collecting another resource from the ground. I also enjoyed helping characters by finding the right plants for their problems. Cooking ties nicely into the exploration. Instead of treating food as a basic survival meter, the game makes preparing it part of the experience. I liked discovering how different ingredients could be used and how the food connects with the cultures and traditions of the people I meet. A fun little game that caters to some of my very specific interests. It's pretty short, not unexpectedly. I would be very excited to see if this studio has anything like this planned for the future with a larger variety of biomes and available forage.
