- New Ships: Explore in over 60 ships of varying sizes from scout class ships to the much larger carrier class battleships.
- New Upgrades: Upgrade your ships systems with many more upgrades, and download new upgrades that make use of the new scripting engine designed specially for X².
- New Weapons: Add new weapons to your ship including the Ion Disruptor and Mass Driver, but also build factories that will develop these weapons and sell them to make a profit, expanding your own empire among the universe.
- New Missions: Take part in missions offered to you on each stations bulletin board, make money by defending convoys and destroy incoming Xenon fleets intent on destroying everything in their path.
But above all else, help to defend the universe from the Khaak, before they kill everyone and everything they come across.

Great classic game!
Recommended for anyone who wants a great blend of story, sandbox, and classic X-Universe empire building. I am playing through all the X-Universe games and finished my playthrough of X2: The Threat. It's a large leap forward from X-Tension. The graphics and overall style feel like a big jump in quality, and the presentation holds up surprisingly well for its age. It also combines a proper storyline with the open-ended sandbox in a way that works naturally. The story itself is decent, and the cutscenes are neat even if the animations are a bit janky and the dialogue/voice acting leans into early-2000s cringe. What I appreciated most is the pacing. Characters actually tell you to go build up your money and factories between certain missions, so the game encourages you to explore the sandbox instead of rushing the plot. This is also the first entry with the Artificial Life system and scripting engine, which makes the universe feel more alive and opens the door for modding. Combined with the expanded economy and deeper mechanics, it’s a big step up from the earlier games. Combat is much improved, especially capital ship battles. This, for me, is the X universe at its best. It's a space trading game with depth and it's relaxing. Later games are great, though I find the controlls on X4 a nightmare, but the later games become more and more a bussiness empire simulation and less and less a space trading game. I loved Elite on the Apple 2e and Wingcommander Privateer on PC, which is probably why I keep coming back to this game. This still works on win 11 without any problems, the good people over at Egosoft patched it so it still fun to play.
