X: Beyond the Frontier

Personally, I played this as a nostalgic time piece from my childhood. I never understood what the game really was as a very young kid. I was like 3 when it released probably 5 or 6 when I first played it. It captivated me and was a favorite for my brother and I growing up. That said, I don't think this game is for most people. Some things are very frustrating, like when you shoot your weapons your ship straight up has a seizure. It's so bad that by the end, when you've got good shields installed, it's almost better just to ram your ship into the enemy's ship just to destroy them. Not fun. The sim portion is very easily exploitable and you're basically just waiting for the credit numbers to go up by using SETA (a time warp device) to speed up the process. I had around 5 million credits by the end which is way more than anyone needs in a playthrough. Once you enough money to outfit your ship with the best weapons and shields, all there is left to do is complete the story, which is very short and not very engaging. To top it off, the last stretch of the story has you waiting on a painfully slow ship to return home. Again, you're basically just passing time using SETA until it reach…

Decided to just test this game to see where the X universe started as im new to the franchise and x4, what i thought was just gonna be a half hour for trying out of what i presumed was the basic formula of X but then i honestly got hooked. after 103 hours completed the main mission, and thinking about doing X tension next... it is a bit grindy but honestly not bad for a game from 1999

Recommended for fans of the X-Universe or anyone who enjoys chill trading sims. X: Beyond the Frontier is definitely showing its age. The graphics are old, the UI is clunky, and you’re stuck with a single ship for the entire game. But once you settle in, it becomes a surprisingly relaxing trading and factory building experience. You start with basically nothing and slowly trade your way up, upgrading your one ship until it becomes a real powerhouse. The core loop will feel familiar if you’ve played later X games: buying low, selling high, filling economic gaps, and building a few stations. But everything here is much more manual. There’s no galaxy map, no property menu, and very little automation. The economy is simpler, and you'll most likely only ever build a handful of factories. One big thing worth mentioning: this game comes from an era when reading the manual and readme was expected. There are controls, mechanics, and bits of guidance documented there that never appear in‑game. Spending a few minutes with those files makes the early hours much smoother. could be a good game, only thing is that i will never know because it's made for qwerty and the remapping is a lie that doesn't work, so i can't play this game which i bought -_-

It is a space docking sim. If you want to drive around a space ship, fight some other space ships while you try and make money in a space station economy, this game is for you. It has lots of "hurry up and wait" in 15-30s chunks but it still got enough fun it to begin with.
