X3: Reunion from Egosoft is a space simulation that fully commits to the idea of player-driven freedom, offering a universe that feels less like a guided experience and more like an open-ended system waiting to be understood and shaped. Rather than funneling players through tightly scripted missions, it drops them into a sprawling network of sectors connected by jumpgates and lets them decide what kind of life they want to build among the stars. Whether that means becoming a trader, a mercenary, a pirate, or an industrial magnate is entirely up to the player, and that sense of autonomy is the game’s defining strength. The structure of the game revolves around a living economy that operates independently of the player’s actions. Stations produce goods, resources fluctuate based on supply and demand, and factions interact within a dynamic framework that continues regardless of player involvement. This creates a world that feels active and reactive, where opportunities emerge naturally rather than being handed out through scripted events. Players can start small, hauling goods between stations for profit, and gradually scale up to managing fleets and building entire production networ…4 found this helpful
TL;DR - Not recommended unless you’re playing it for completion’s sake. X2 and X3:Terran Conflict are better experiences. If you’re exploring the X-Universe, I’d suggest playing X2, then skipping straight to Terran Conflict. My Steam hours are not correct as didn't run the game though Steam. I probably have 60+ hours of gametime. I completed the story and did all the missions to get my own HQ. I ran the EXE directly with a limit of 2 CPU cores as this improved stability and performance a bit, found this solution in an old Egosoft Forum Post from 20 years ago lol. FULL Review Below: I’m playing through the entire X-Universe series, and X3: Reunion has been the first real stumble. While it looks visually impressive for its time, almost every part of the experience feels like a step backward from X2 in terms of usability, pacing, and overall fun. The biggest issue is the UI. X2’s interface was nicer, faster, and easier to navigate, while X3’s menus, property management, and ship commands all take noticeably longer to use. On my Legion Go, this was even more frustrating, the extra complexity made my controller setup feel awkward and slowed down basic empire management. Stability w…1 found this helpful
I would love to play this the concept is great but the mechanics are so bad I used to play one version of this and built a empire but this time or this version I give up. So I get pirate to bail out and I try to claim his ship but it wont let me then trying to get back in my ship it wont let me then I get so close I collide and die. This is just the last of many bugs that make the game not playable.1 found this helpful
had not played for years and then only 1 hour, could not remember why. Reloaded......now I remember why. Did not play x or x2 or any cash grab before this,. NO tutorial, tried for a couple of hours, nope.Might be a good game,no idea.
From what I can see so far X3 is less about ship piloting (though you certaintly can) and is more of a very slow, first person Space RTS game about making your mark on the universe by gathering a fleet/allies. It's also more complete than Star Citizen will probably ever be and it's not online only. It's also got a great soundtrack. ...man the state of modern space sims is depressing.
Nope. When I get dialogue (potentially important to the story) I want to hear that dialogue. And not have the music drown out said dialogue. Happened in the intro cutscene and the first mission intro, and I uninstalled. And "it's a 20 year old game" doesn't fly, just the opposite. Heck, the most recent patch is from 2023. 20 years and they couldn't even be bothered to mix those cutscenes properly?
