About Zebulon: A Lost Cat

Zebulon the cat is lost in a strange place, but he has a lot of courage and curiosity quickly replaces fear as he explores and unravels the world around him. It also helps that smelly green food is everywhere to grab!
No matter the traps and falls, Zebulon can always get back up, he will learn new tricks and reach higher and deeper places. Even death is not the end but only a slight set back and an invitation to wander further
Zebulon is a tiny 2D platformer with metroidvania mechanics where you will have to use skills and observation to awaken Zebulon's powers in a world filled with surprises and tricky environments
This game is made using “fantasy console” Pico 8 with its recognizable 16-color palette, crunchy sweet 128x128 resolution pixel art and 4-channel chiptune
Thanks to the use of Zepto 8 emulator, an optional wide mode is included to go beyond Pico 8’s usual square screen, as well as visual filters to tweak your experience (scanlines, CRT, toon, minit...)
The Pico 8 cartridge and all source files are included in a separate free DLC that you can pick up if you want to play it in Pico 8 itself or see how the game was created 7 challenges modes exists in Zebulon, each game mode is associated with an achievement:
  • Normal mode : Explore the game and find powers and collectibles
  • Bonus mode : You will need to find every bonus before finishing the game
  • Explorer : no map for you, have fun wandering around and make your own path
  • Minit : you die every minute, you better go fast or you will never get anywhere
  • Half-Minit : you die every 30 seconds, only for the bravest of cats
  • 9 lives : you can only die 9 times, like every cat
  • Deathless : just don’t die, not even once...

A very well done microvania. The only fault is that while progress is saved automatically, there is only one save point located where you start the game.

Tiny metroidvania and delivers it!

im finding that small precision platformers are very restful for me, and this was no exception. i liked how simple and pure this was, ur just a tiny cat collecting small orbs and big orbs. the BGM got somewhat repetitive, but its such a small game its kind of perfect as it is. also love that this was made in pico-8 and still has steam cloud save! i didn't know u could do that! the dev created her own emulator for pico8 code, to make the game widescreen instead of square, and to add screen filters like scanlines. really impressive.

Short but sweet Metroidvania with good movement. Reminds me of little flash games back in the day, in a positive way, and has a whole medal system for if you want to go deeper into replaying it for speed or precision. Easily worth a few bucks.

Short and sweet. It's a tiny metroidvania which will last you more or less an hour. It does a good job capturing the essential fun of metroidvania gameplay on a highly compressed map. The cat's animation is a highlight. The music is fun but never changes, making it become a little tiring after a while. Other notable annoyances include the camera becoming jumpy at some spots on the map and the hardest platforming challenge in the game being a little tedious because of how failure works in that spot. Those are the only flaws I can reasonably think of, otherwise the game is nothing but delightful.
