About Breakout 13

✦ AI summary

Navigate a branching narrative through a harrowing correctional institute where your choices determine survival and justice, uncovering the dark truth behind abusive "therapy" practices. This FMV game combines cinematic storytelling with diverse interactive gameplay—QTEs, puzzle-solving, deduction, and surveillance—offering thousands of unique story paths and eight major endings based on your decisions to escape, investigate, scheme, or uphold justice.

Step into the shoes of a game-loving teen, sent to a harsh correctional institute by Principal Yang for your supposed internet addiction. Inspired by a real-life figure, Dr. Yang, a controversial psychiatrist who advocated for electrotherapy to "cure" troubled teens. You will navigate a branching narrative and make choices that impact your fate.

Unravel the truth behind the institute, disguise yourself, protect your friends, and terminate this notorious real-life event. But watch out, as the villain of the story still holds power in the real world. Will you triumph against the odds?

The complete game is comprised of two parts: 'Part I: Gratitude' and 'Part II: Fight'.

Gameplay

This game offers you thousands of storylines and multiple endings, allowing you to do what is right and just within the game. In this game, you will experience unique gameplay elements rarely seen in FMV games, such as QTE (Quick Time Events), scene exploration, clue gathering, deduction, puzzle-solving, and real-time surveillance monitoring. You will be granted more freedom to imbue your story with personal significance.

Story

Immerse yourself in a thrilling adventure where you excel as a skilled gamer in the virtual realm. Yet, in reality, you're a teenager grappling with internet addiction. This lands you in the infamous behavior correction center headed by the enigmatic Principal Yang. Brace yourself for a rollercoaster of experiences as you undergo the notorious "Gratitude" therapy, a harrowing journey of transformation involving verbal abuse, corporal punishment, psychological pressure from mutual accusations, and electroshock treatments.

Escape , if you have the agility;
Investigate , if you can find the concealed truth;
Scheme , if you can win your companions' trust;
Uphold justice , if you are certain about your choices.

Seize control of your destiny, as well as that of your companions and the entire correction center, as the power to shape the future rests firmly in your grasp.

About us

We are ALT Lab, a dedicated team focused on creating interactive narrative games. We firmly believe in the unyielding power of stories to touch and change lives, and we aspire to carve out our generation's unique story through a diverse array of captivating media formats.

A little more to say

If there's a story that embodies the frustration that has been locked in the hearts of our generation of gamers, it's the one we're about to tell. Reality is often more fantastical than fiction. In the early stages, we conducted extensive research and interviews with various parties, including internet addiction schools and academies, and the staggering absurdity of reality left us in awe. We found that much of it stems from the malice of unscrupulous institutions, misunderstandings from parents and society, and our own inability to express ourselves when we were young. We hope that our game can foster greater mutual understanding.

After more than two years of development and overcoming numerous challenges, we completed filming in various locations during the pandemic and went through multiple rounds of game polishing. We are acutely aware of the sensitive nature of this subject matter and have been relentless in our pursuit of staying true to our original intent. We are honored to bring this game to life. May all parents and children be understood, and treated with kindness and gentleness.

Probably my first FMV game. It was good.

Disturbing and great, very upset the game forces "DLC" to actually finish the game though, kind of shady? However I think the game is worth it, it would be nice if the game and its DLC were packed together as a full game because as it stands breakout13 is definitely incomplete. It seems very shady and I only picked up the DLC because its on sale.

What you need to know before: 1. The game is divided into two parts for which you have to pay seperately. 2. The game can softlock you in the endgame, if you havent met certain condition. For example havent reached a certain relationship status with a character. Now you have two options: Replay the entire game from a certain point OR buy items for real money to boost the characters mood. 3. The game has severe problems with translation. A lot of typos and mistranslations make it sometimes hard to truly understand what option you are actually picking. I was in the middle of the finale, when I encountered the 2. and it instantly made me regret buying and playing this. It's otherwise a solid game with good actors and good production value. But I just cant see myself support microtransactions in a FMV game.

[8.5/10] [Story spoilers warning] Since I personally experienced something similar. I had wanted to play this game ever since the demo was released. After the full version came out, but the "Fight" DLC had not been released yet, so I completely finished the first half of the game with full completion (hahah). Later, when I finally had the time, I came back and finished the rest of it. Overall, the story really moved me. Many parts of the game felt exactly like things I had experienced myself and reminded me of the correctional institute that my parents had sent me to before. The issues shown in the game, such as institutional problems, abuse, violence, electric shock torture, the mistreatment of people in vulnerable situations, and other inhumane forms of punishment, are things that genuinely exist. They are also things I still cannot forget even today. Because of that, I have naturally loved this game, and this is the only interactive movie-style game that I was able to fully play through. The story has two endings, and I personally prefer the 2nd ending. Considering that the characters are trapped in such a violent hell, it feels like using violence might actually be the bett…

I'm a big FMV game fan and have played dozens over the years. It doesn't take much to make me happy, but ultimately I was let down by this game. The story and the FMV scenes are fine. But this game is too clunky with too many unexplained dead ends to recommend. I shouldn't have to keep coming back to Steam Communities to figure out where I went wrong.
