About Within the Backrooms

The Game

Within the Backrooms is a liminal exploration game with light puzzle elements. Use tools you find and mysterious floppy disks to traverse the world, uncover the secrets of the Backrooms, and find out why you're here. Try not to get lost in the winding maze of the Lobby, explore the abandoned and decrepit Mall, relive childhood memories in the unsettling Playground, and experience sublimity in the placid, yet haunting, Pool.

The World

Explore a vast world of liminal spaces. Providing an uncanny nostalgia where reality isn't quite the same. Featuring 4 unique and diverse main floors and many different-sub floors to find, there's secrets lurking around every corner. Given nothing, you must be adventurous and clever. Question everything you see and everything they say.

The Graphics

Within the Backrooms pays homage to a time where edges were jagged and textures pixelate from afar. The game replicates the style of the PS1 era and plays in the same aspect ratio.

Reviews

"The game is a blast. The aesthetic exudes mid 90s design, the music captures the atmosphere perfectly, the surrealist character designs and optical illusion levels were pure mindf***ery. I feel there's a lot that I left unexplored and hidden in the maze of walls. I like the puzzle solving that opens up parts of the level. At points it felt like I was in a living version of that old school screensaver." - FREAKBAiT @freakbait

✦ AI summary

Within the Backrooms is a liminal space exploration game that excels at creating an eerie, nostalgic atmosphere through its retro PSX-style aesthetics and subtly unsettling soundtrack that perfectly complements the surreal environments. Players praise the variety in room design, creative visual execution, and sense of discovery through exploration and collectibles, though some find the item-collection progression tedious and wish for more content beyond the 2-3 hour experience.

Amazing Backrooms themed walking-sim! The ambience is really well executed; the visuals and music capture its surreal, serene, nostalgic but eerie essence wonderfully. Perfectly nailed the "everything is familiar but I don't feel safe" feeling! I like the map designs a lot, there is a lot to explore and various references to find. I struggled with navigating through the mazes lol, but even though it's possible to figure out with some patience, it's very useful that there are guides and videos covering the progression including all easily missable secrets (I highly recommend to explore it completely, even the tiny bonus maps can be mesmerizing). The endings are really brief but hold certain charm and a massive sense of discomfort, I enjoyed them a lot but wish they had more content. Luckily it's possible to discover everything in one playthrough, HOWEVER it requires closing the game after an ending to continue from the last save after restarting, otherwise the save file gets resetted (those 5-30 second long endings are NOT worth 10 full replays). I'll also mention that despite me really loving the graphics, they can absolutely trigger motion-sickness - I felt unwell to the point …

The aesthetic of this game is bizarre, It reminds me of those ancient 3D PC game rendering or like play station 1 graphics, Its hard to describe then dipped the the game in liminal space and I love it, Im addicted to that weird retro uncanny valley aesthetic vibe and this game feeds me straight into the veins It technically has objectives, but the whole point of this game is just wandering around and soaking in the exploration, the maps, the general wtf level art style, and the soundtrack, which is this mix of chill, relaxing, and subtly creepy, just mesh perfectly It’s a pretty short experience, the whole thing in like 2 or 3 hours, but for the price it goes on sale its a decent snack, short and strange, and for people that just wanna vibe in the fever dream Despite the name, calling it backrooms, It leans way harder into that dreamcore/weirdcore, Not b*tch*ng about it, just an observation 7.5/10 would go on this surreal fever dream again

8/10 I'm not a huge fan of the whole PSX/N64 graphics, however this one managed to exceed my expectations. It really is one of the better liminal space/backrooms games. It has a ton of variety in the rooms, and some rooms which were just so unique it was incredible. The rooms are a bit small, but very well done and the liminal feeling is strong. The music was also fire and I wish more liminal space games used music to their advantage like this one. The collectibles/items are fun to use, even if there is some backtracking at times. But, one thing I didn't like is that upon leaving an area and coming back everything is reset. Doors locked again. Items still there even though you already picked them up. A bit confusing and weird, but not a huge deal. The end was a bit weak, but I wasn't too upset about it. There are also some issues with the stairs, as in you will need to jump up them instead of walk. And you will have to cheese the end (Alt/F4) to get all the achievements without playing it 11 times... that was an... interesting choice by the devs. Overall, this is a very solid liminal space game that I will definitely play again. Overall, if you like these types of games then I w…

I'm not sure if this is accurate or not, but I think I soft locked myself by not getting the crowbar in the first level, which means I can't get the last coin I need to get the doorknob in the second level. I could not find a crowbar for the life of me in the mall.. maybe there is, but I looked for a long time. I generally love these backroom liminal space games, but this one just feels tedious with needing to find items to advance. The maze is enough if done right, which also, this game doesn't have that vibe. There is no sense of unease, awe, or tension. Idk, just didn't hit like others have for me.
