About Faces of War

✦ AI summary

Lead squads or jump into the action yourself as you command Allied, German, or Soviet forces through visceral WWII battles where every explosion reshapes the terrain and survival depends on tactical cunning. This real-time strategy hybrid lets you orchestrate ambushes and armored assaults across dynamic, destructible European battlefields where smart positioning and resourcefulness matter far more than overwhelming numbers.

Take command. Take cover. Take the fight head-on.The second instalment in the series that would become known as Men of War! Faces of War puts you in the heart of World War II – not as a distant commander, but as the leader on the ground. Combining the tactical depth of real-time strategy with the immediacy of direct control, it lets you issue precise orders or jump straight into battle as one of your soldiers.Lead Allied, German, or Soviet forces through the decisive European campaigns of 1944–1945. Coordinate ambushes, flanking maneuvers, and armored assaults across battlefields that react to your every move. Every explosion reshapes the terrain, every bullet counts, and survival depends on quick thinking rather than scripted events.Faces of War delivers a visceral and cinematic World War II experience defined by realism, scale, and tactical freedom. Each battle unfolds differently depending on your strategy and how you use the environment to your advantage. Leadership, instinct, and resourcefulness matter more than numbers – there are no front lines, no safety, only the fight.

Key features:

  • Real-time tactical combat – control entire squads or take command of a single soldier for precise on-the-ground action.
  • Dynamic, destructible environments – use collapsing walls, craters, and debris as cover or traps.
  • Authentic WWII warfare – command Allied, German, and Soviet troops across Europe’s most intense battlefields.
  • Advanced AI – your soldiers think, react, and adapt to changing conditions in real time.
  • Full physics simulation – bullets, vehicles, and explosions behave with weight and realism.
  • Multiplayer and mission editor – create your own scenarios or battle others in skirmishes and cooperative play. Faces of War is affected by the GameSpy shutdown on the 31st of May. You can continue to play the game through LAN, DirectIP and GameRanger.

Can't initialize network game. Winsock2.2 is not installed. Broken & Unsupported: The game is severely outdated. Multiplayer is fundamentally broken, and the lack of developer support means you’re essentially buying a "as-is" single-player experience that struggles on modern systems. Missing Features: It lacks basic Steam integration. no Workshop for mods, no Trading Cards, and no modern flourishes to justify a digital purchase in 2026. Clunky Controls: The UI is a nightmare. There is no WASD camera control in indirect mode, and you can't toggle a unified control scheme for both modes. Plus, it still relies on the archaic Left-Click to move, which feels counterintuitive by today’s standards. Progression & Bugs: The "Repair Tank" quest is completely broken, often doing nothing and soft-locking your progress. Compounding the lack of depth is the total absence of a soldier leveling system, leaving you with no sense of growth or veterancy for your troops. Verdict: Skip it. Unless you have deep nostalgia, the technical hurdles and broken quests make this a frustrating relic rather than a playable classic.

This was my introduction to the Men of War Franchise when I was a younger; I had the CD case back when they sold it physically. With other options on the table, this game is now outdated graphically and mechanically, but it maintains the same soul that the other games still have. It's usually very cheap and for the campaigns of all the countries I'd say it's worth it.

Faces of War is the direct sequel to Soldiers: Heroes of World War II and the missing link before the Men of War series. Built on an improved version of Best Way's GEM engine, it expands on its predecessor with larger-scale battles, smarter AI, improved physics, and even more tactical freedom. The core gameplay remains the same: you command a small group of soldiers in real time, where every unit, vehicle, and piece of equipment matters. Success rarely comes from brute force alone—you'll constantly have to improvise, manage your resources, exploit the environment, and adapt to changing situations. Compared to Soldiers, battles are much larger, with friendly AI forces fighting alongside you, making the battlefield feel far more alive without sacrificing the series' trademark attention to detail. The game features three campaigns from the Allied, German, and Soviet perspectives, covering some of the most iconic battles of the final years of World War II. The atmospheric orchestral soundtrack deserves a special mention, as it perfectly captures both the intensity of combat and the somber tone of the conflict, making every mission even more memorable. Despite its age, very few tacti…
