What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Pile Up! is a strategic building game with an interesting premise and attractive pixel art, but players consistently report severe issues with its core gameplay experience. Major complaints include unclear placement mechanics that don't communicate where buildings can go, poor visibility of holes and resource ranges that are essential to the strategy, uncomfortable camera controls, and lack of controller support.
Destroys your pc. Malware.
I didn't get past the tutorial objective to place a house perfectly." I attempted to place the house in an absurd amount of different places, but it only ever responded "Not there." It didn't show me where the perfect place was. Instead, it had me repeat the steps enough times that uninstalling the game was the best part of the experience.
Interesting idea, execution power went all into nice pixels, completely forgot testing the /game/ itself by someone who want to play it rather than watching screenshots. I'm seriously baffled how one even go out with such design these days. Even 30 years ago the strategy games started with providing the player the information needed for the strategy. With views, layers, etc. If some resource or building range is needed for happiness goal, there was a way to see where those are, how far they reach. Not in this game. Also, key point of the game is to fill holes properly. But there is no easy way to see where the holes are, know their extent -- and even if you figure out by some magic, sometimes you just can't place the next building into it. Wow. Even the basic camera controls can't be driven by keys during placement. :( the way it is it's just source of frustration. And all that could have been fixed with small amount of effort.
Disgusting controls. Unplayable.
Really cool strategic game! Not sure I've ever played anything like this. You have to strike the balance between generating enough buildings and utilities, while taking care to place objects where they won't explode and/or kill people. I feel that there's a lot of mastery to be able to develop in this game. Biggest criticism: night time is too dark for me to see what's going on. I play with low brightness to save my eyes. I wanted a setting where it always appeared as day but it doesn't exist. If I could pose a suggestion, to keep decipherability between day and night, maybe make night time more like sunset instead in the settings? Originally wanted to play this with a controller but couldn't figure out the controls, so please give us controller support :)
Sadly the rouguelite elements stretch the gameplay a lot, it's not only about building and management, it's a pretty much luck based run each time. Of course, your decisions, perks and upgrades matter, but the game it's still meant to be restarted again. The Kowloon Walled City style of architecture (if it can be called that) looks clean and cute, while knowing it's a dirty, claustrophobic and horrible way to live. But the art style is cute, yes.
