Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Great game in nearly every category. No issues with framerate even with everything maxed out. Good story and characters. Compared to the old series this one has more freedom in the way you tackle quest. There is a main city that has its own side quest as well as campaign. There are different areas you can visit and revisit as the game progresses. It is easier than the old games. The main issue I have with the game is the way you unlock skills. If you only focus on the main quest you don't unlock more than half the move list. A lot of them are unlocked by clearing out Oni Gates. I mostly focus on the main quest because the combat vs regular enemies is too easy and repetitive. Feels like doing fetch quest in other games.

A fresh take on an old classic. I've been missing the Onimusha series for a long time now, and had to get by on my near-dead PS2. Although this game is completely different from what I wished for in an "Onimusha" game, I think it did it well with some caveats. 1. The swordplay is phenomenal and really makes you feel like an unstoppable samurai warrior. The timings are tight, but if you get it right you will be rewarded immensely. 2. There are some neat nods to the original series that I appreciated. I'm sure other long time fans know what I mean. 3. The graphics and performance are pretty good! I'm playing on a lenovo legion laptop and it surprisingly hasn't caused my fan to take off like a helicopter. 4. The only downside is that it felt too safe. The original Onimusha series took cues from how resident evil did their world and layout as well as some puzzle mechanics. This just feels like a cinematic samurai simulator with some genma involved. The world is gorgeous, but bland and empty at the same time. Either make it fully open world, or don't have such a dead hub. It feels strange wandering around Kyoto in this manner not to mention lack of side quests and activities. It …

Absolutely fantastic combat mechanics. Humorous protagonist. Decent writing. Already feels like a classic. No gigantic open world slop that wastes your time. Just an overall great time!

This game is good, coming from an Elden ring, monster hunter, sekiro, wukong, darksouls trilogy and many other action and souls like games player I recommend this game. A little easy on the start but gets harder, and hard mode (carnage) is even better, I waited till I finished carnage mode for my review and I had a blast wih it, hope it gets an expansion or a sequel in the future.

Went in having never played any other Onimusha game before, didn't really know the franchise either, and it exceeded my expectations. Thought it would play like a slower paced Sekiro, just very simple but refined combat, but was pleasantly surprised at how having so many different defensive options in your arsenal really opens up the combat. Issen, Deflect, Parry, Reflex Dodge, all have their uses, and it is best to utilize them all during a fight (until you really master the fight and can just Issen everything). In terms of reactive, parry-based combat systems with focus mainly on reactions, this sits at the top with Sekiro and Khazan which I also hold highly. Offense is also a little more interesting than other similar games where yes, you have your lights and heavies, but you also have an arsenal of additional weapons you can switch between, and there can be anywhere from 3-5 gauges that you are managing during the fight. All this is also wrapped in probably one of the most well-animated games I have ever seen with so many different contextual animations that it really does play like an interactive movie. Way of the Sword runs very well on PC! Beat the game twice so far. And it did not crash once during my 70 plus hours. The sword play mechanic's are excellent! I started using the parries but before long I was deflecting, dodging, and attempting the Issen Counter. I played the first four games on the playstation 2 growing up. But the first time I played Onimusha was on the original Xbox called Genma Onimusha. They added a lot more mechanics in that port of the game. I did not expect to see another Onimusha in my life time! Glad to see it back! The English and Japanese voice actors performances are well done. The weakest part I think of way of the sword is the semi open world and it's side quests. I think if Kyoto had more visual appeal it would help. And Kyoto doesn't feel alive. It doesn't need to be on the level of GTA or Red Dead lol I think if the towns people where seen doing different activities it would help. For example have NPC's barricading their homes and helping their neighbor's defend against the Genma invasion. However this may have been out of the scope and budget of the developer's.
