✦ AI summary

Skipper is a puzzle game with solid, challenging level design that works well on Steam Deck, but it suffers from significant technical neglect including broken achievements, missing music functionality, unregistered bugs in specific levels, and no undo feature. The developer appears to have abandoned development despite promising updates years ago, leaving the game in an incomplete state that undermines what could otherwise be an enjoyable minimalist puzzle experience.

Played on Steam Deck. I was not expecting an actual challenges from the looks of this game. I really enjoyed the puzzle design, and the gameplay fit very well on the Deck, but the developer has obviously abandoned the game in an unfinished state. No 'undo' button. No music in the game just sound effects when moving. I checked the options too and there is a music checkbox but turning it on and off does nothing. Achievements have been broken for 2+ years. The credits say "new adventures dropping soon" but in 2019 three levels were actually removed from the game and nothing has been added since. There are bugs in a couple stages: level 27 a crossroads doesn't correctly register the correct color, and Cupid's Repose there is a bugged switch that sometimes registers sometimes not. And worst of all in my opinion the second DLC 'Maze of Love' is clearly unsolvable. The developer responded to questions about this level by referencing some QA of how the playtester solved it but the solution clearly doesn't work and there has been no activity since. Even for a sale price I don't recommend supporting this practice of selling unfinished games.

The trailer is very honest. The developer(s), 2xMilk, seem to fart out a game every few years, so if you wanna throw a couple bucks their way to keep them going AND get a puzzle game too then you will like this game.

Skipper is a quaint little puzzle game where you move up to three separate cubes along grid-based levels to reach an exit. In their way are gates that can be opened and closed as well as colored tiles that require a corresponding key to be held to open them. The cubes cannot step on spaces they have already stepped on unless another cube overwrites their step — as such, each puzzle generally involves figuring out how to switch between the cubes and move in such a way that they can all make it to the exit without getting blocked off by their previous moves. It's a simple and clean concept, though the execution is not without issues. For one, the isometric perspective makes movement a tad more confusing because the game still has to be played with typical 4-directional input. I would semi-regularly forget whether my down button meant down-left or down-right, which would not be so bad if it were not for the glaring omission of an undo button. Now, the levels are not very lengthy, but it is still rather irritating to have to restart from the very beginning of one for a single mistake which may not have even been my intended move. Despite those flaws, I had a pleasant time with Skippe…
