About Song of the Deep

Song of the Deep is a metroidvania-style action-adventure game following a girl’s quest into the unknown to find her missing father. Combining discovery, skill, and suspense with an unforgettable narrative, this underwater journey will challenge players to explore, experiment, and skillfully navigate a vast ocean landscape.

Gameplay
Song of the Deep delivers unique gameplay in a tale of love, heartbreak, and triumph. Explore a fantastic non-linear interactive underwater world filled with more than 200 treasures to collect. Equip your submarine with 30 upgrades and 15-plus abilities to access new areas of the sea, and combine those abilities in surprising ways -- like catching a torpedo with your claw arm mechanism. Outwit, outmaneuver and battle creatures along the way, from lantern jellies to giant bosses like The Watcher.

Storyline
Merryn waits all night for her father to return from his fishing voyage. He never does. After a vivid dream showing her father trapped under the sea, Merryn is determined to save him. This unlikely heroine builds a small submarine from spare parts and sets off to rescue him. Along the way, she’ll make friends, discover lost civilizations and ruins, and upgrade her submarine to explore even deeper. The terrain and monsters of the deep are daunting, but Merryn’s courage, intelligence, and love for her father will help her overcome adversity.

Not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, but very unpolished. A Meh-troidvania, if you will. Combat isn't difficult, but it is frustrating. Ending leaves the possibility open for a sequel and while I'm guessing it won't happen at this point, I think there is at least an opportunity there to fix what are, in my opinion, some pretty glaring issues and really make something that is special.

Cute game that will keep you entertained for a day or 2. If you like Aquaria you'll like this one even though there's more fighting, but also more puzzles. Graphics and music are great, controls are interesting, game difficulty gets easy if you collect a lot of stuff, the progression feels like you're getting more powerful, which is good. Very nice!

Game breaking bugs.

It has beautiful visuals, music, and a great atmosphere. While the map is quite diverse, the puzzles are pretty creative, and the combat is pretty fun, the game is held back by its repetitive nature and a buttload of bugs. Overall, it's a fun game and very easy to 100%.

Bought this game over 10 years ago when it first came out and didn't finish it. I have now gone back and finished it, 100% complete save for a few stray treasures. Overall the game was a 7.5 of 10 for me. It is a Metroidvania, but it is of a slower, and somewhat more casual pace. Even though it was made by a AAA studio, there is some jank occassionaly with how treasure, items, or puzzles interact. Nothing stupidly game breaking, but it did make some things more frustrating then they seemed to need to be. The Story is simple, but good and the narration is on point. Gameplay wise there's plenty of collectables, mostly treasures which can be used to purchase some upgrades. Sub control is pretty good, feels like you're in a craft for sure. Combat is pretty simple, and somewhat braindead later at times. Is this a game you should buy and must play? Probably not, but it is still a solid game. Honestly I think it kinda got a bit overshadowed by other's when it came out due to 2016 being a big year for games. If it's on sale and you want to dump about 7-10 hours into a decent Metroidvania with a rarely seen underwater themem then I say grab it!
