Quake 4

Quake 4 is great Quake game, but it is certainly not without its flaws. Unlike prior Quake games, Quake 4 is clearly interested in delivering a narrative and having characters. It continues from the events of Quake II, but with a new protagonist. The story, though by no means the most profound, kept me interested throughout my entire playthrough. This game took me roughly 9.5 hours on Nightmare difficulty (or whatever Quake 4 calls it). There's a lot of content here, and unlike Quake II, there's a decent amount of environmental variety. For a game from 2005, the visuals hold up remarkably well. The new enemies are great, and I'm a fan of some of the redesigns. That all being said, Quake 4 has a handful of notable problems. First, this game is a bit janky to play on modern software. High graphic settings won't work unless you force them to in the config text file. Second, the movement feels dull. This is a Quake game. Movement is pretty important to the franchise. At first I thought there was some sprint feature I didn't know how to use because of how painfully slow the movement was. There are stat upgrades throughout the game that make you faster, but the movement never feels great…

A very underrated game

Pretty alright Quake game! I'd recommend buying when its on sale though, $15 is a bit much for this. Would love to see a remaster like what Quake and Quake II got.

Designed for FPS fanatics. A shooter that offers no real satisfaction from shooting because the weapons deal so little damage. A good game ruined by an idiot who wrote down too little numbers in a few files. A sloppy difficulty level. More damage and more health for enemies? Only lazy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ solve difficulty levels this way. Garbage.
