✦ AI summary

OTXO is a roguelike twin-stick shooter inspired by Hotline Miami that players praise for its satisfying gunplay, chaotic bullet-hell mechanics, and rewarding progression loop, but criticize for thin weapon variety that doesn't meaningfully change gameplay, repetitive procedurally-generated level design, and technical issues like frame drops that can be frustrating. The aesthetic divides players—some enjoy the stark black-and-white style while others feel it lacks the visual appeal and carefully-crafted level design of its inspiration.
OTXO — Hotline Miami's speed without Hotline Miami's QoL and intrigue
TL;DR: Not recommended. The aesthetic works, but the game withholds information it has no reason to withhold, and the weapon variety is thinner than the count suggests. Picked this up fresh from the Humble Roguelike Bundle. It's very much a Hotline Miami-esque game, and I come to it as someone who played Hotline Miami extensively and finished it at 100%. This one didn't land for me, and I want to be specific about why.
Read this first: my frame of reference
I'm coming at OTXO with Hotline Miami as my baseline, because OTXO is explicitly chasing that style. That means I arrive with a picture of how this kind of game works, and OTXO changes several things in directions I don't like. Some of my criticism is genuinely about design, and some of it is about the gap between what I expected and what I got. Worth knowing before you weigh any of it. That said — I genuinely cannot understand how this game sits at 93% positive. That surprises me a lot. I'm usually able to see what a well-reviewed game is doing even when it isn't for me, and here I can't. Make of that what you will.
What's f…

It's essentially rougelike Hotline Miami and it's good. The moment to moment gun play feels great. One gripe is that the weapon and upgrades often aren't different / impact enough don't really changes how I play, so it's a not as replayble as some of the other rougelike twin stick shooter I've played. But as of writing, I've played over 7h and I'm still having fun, which is still pretty good.

I've put most of my hours into this game on the PlayStation 5 port of the game but I very much enjoy this game and recommend you play it

What if Hotline Miami, but none of the color, or level design, just the same procedurally generated black an white hallways with side rooms.

Really nice roguelike with bullet hell and bullet-time elements. The gameplay is chaotic in a really fun way and the feedback is incredibly satisfying. The core loop is effective and unlocking lore, story elements and more drinks throughout each run makes the progression feel natural and rewarding. I personally wish there were more meta progression though but the game is more than replayable without it I'd recommend it though it was quite difficult for me atleast

Yay frame drops killing you very fun otherwise its fine though it gets boring and repetitive quickly.
