About Near Death

✦ AI summary

Near Death strands you at an abandoned Antarctic research station where you must navigate deadly blizzards, sub-zero temperatures, and total darkness using innovative tools like light trails and personal heaters to survive and escape. What sets it apart is a dynamic real-time temperature simulation that freezes and thaws your environment room by room, forcing you to actively manage heat, resources, and safe zones against an unforgiving natural world rather than traditional survival mechanics.

After your plane crash-lands in Antarctica, you find yourself stranded and alone at an abandoned research facility in the midst of a deadly blizzard. Plunged into utter darkness, temperatures 100 degrees below zero, and conditions far too harsh to allow for rescue, you must explore Sutro Station and and use the tools at your disposal in hopes of escaping and finding your way home.

Not a survival game, but instead a game about surviving, Near Death pits you against an incredibly cruel opponent: Antarctica. Never more than a few minutes from freezing to death in the darkness of polar night, you must reclaim the station from the elements and fight for your life in a terrifying environment that’s more like another planet than the world you know.

Features

  • A fully explorable Antarctic research station with seamless open world navigation over an unforgiving landscape.
  • Unique gameplay and innovative player tools suited to the harsh realities of a frigid, dark continent. Mark your way with light trails in zero-visibility storms, melt frozen obstacles to explore the base in search of much-needed supplies, create pockets of warmth with a personal heater, and more.
  • A dynamic weather system that utilizes snow, wind, temperature, and lighting to create a multitude of Antarctic conditions ranging from blinding whiteouts to brief moments of calm.
  • A real-time temperature simulation that freezes and thaws the environment room by room based on exposure to the elements, building layouts, the base’s power system, and your own ability to establish safe areas with makeshift repairs.
  • Discoverable blueprints and upgrades that enhance your capabilities and increase your ability to withstand the cold.
  • An original score of haunting ambient music that amplifies the isolation of Sutro Station.

✦ AI summary

Near Death is a grounded narrative survival game set in the Antarctic that eschews traditional antagonists in favor of depicting the primal struggle against nature itself, delivering a unique sense of atmospheric dread over its brief 3-5 hour campaign. Players consistently praise its strong atmosphere, effective pacing, and the novel experience of battling cold and polar storms rather than monsters or aliens, with the weather mechanic and resource management creating genuine tension throughout.

Though certainly rough around the edges, this remains one of the best crafted narrative driven survival games I've played, sitting alongside the likes of Subnautica. The biggest deviation from it's contemporaries is that there are no evil monsters, no zombies, no aliens, not even a single sign of something still alive. Not because of some disaster, or apocalyptic catastrophe. No. It's winter, and you've crash landed in the Antarctic, outside a decommissioned research base. The whole experience instils a unique sense of grounded dread, the feeling of realising that you are not supposed to live here. Nothing is supposed to live here. It lasts just long enough to remain effective throughout, roughly 3 hours per playthrough, and instils a rich sense of atmosphere. There is no other game I can think of where I've repeatedly experienced snow blindness, pushing out into the blizzard, referencing a static map for where I was and where I think I might be, and making a wrong turn. feeling like I should see some sign of my destination, I get reckless and start sprinting. The last thing I see before freezing to death, a glimpse at the start of the path path I'd so brazenly pressed. The reali…

Most similar to a walking sim game with an excellent atmosphere and the ever-present, novel antagonist of the polar storm bearing down on you. The basic resource management and the changing weather makes it feel like you're really battling the wind and cold, and the story propels you through the 3-5 hour experience. It felt like normal difficulty was properly tuned and I really enjoyed this one. I'd highly recommend it to people who enjoy walking sims or that would like a simple survival game that's telling a short tale with no funny business. 9/10, it's a shame it flew under the radar, considering this was the developers' last game I'd assume they've closed up shop.

Short but very enjoyable. Not many games that scratch that long dark itch.

A fun short "adventure" game where you have to collect items to progress the story. Ending could have been a bit more though.
