Underhero

Underhero is a creative 2D RPG and platforming adventure that takes one of fantasy gaming’s oldest formulas and approaches it from an unexpectedly amusing direction. Developed and published by Paper Castle Games, the game places players in the role of the Masked Kid, an insignificant servant working for the villainous Mr. Stitches. The kingdom’s designated hero has already met an unfortunate end, leaving the traditional adventure without the person who was supposed to complete it. Through an unlikely sequence of events, this ordinary enemy underling inherits a much greater responsibility and sets out across the Chestnut Kingdom alongside Elizabeth IV. What follows is a humorous yet surprisingly sincere adventure that combines platforming, exploration, RPG progression, unusual combat mechanics, and a story that gradually becomes more meaningful than its playful opening might suggest. Not a particularly great game but it does a few cool things gameplay and story wise.

This game is extremely fun. Plotwise I think it's pushing the subversion a little too hard. [spoiler]Like, were you trying to get an award for most plot twists in a single cutscene in the lab?[/spoiler]

Haven't finished it yet, I just got past the second world/chapter/whatever and I already love it. Elizabeth IV is my favorite character so far.

Overall a very lovely game. One of the best indie games I've ever had the pleasure of playing. It scratches the paper mario itch 10x better than bug fables, and is criminally under-rated. (Haven't played escape from ever after yet) The music is lovely. Admittedly, the chill and the ambient tracks are much better than the bright and peppy ones. The grassland area theme is a bit overbearing and dull, and the jungle theme isn't my favorite. But overall the music is absolutely wonderful. Characters are great. Stitches is an amazing and funny villain. Sword companion I understand people finding annoying at first, but its necessary for them to have character growth. Don't let negative reviews deceive you, if you have any modicum of patience you definitely come around to them by the end of the game. Also [spoiler] the funny butterfly is good. Neat, and a bit goofy. Other players warn that the game is a bit rough around the edges and that's true. The air controls feel lacking but this game was a positive experience all around. I hate managing my stamina though.
