About Ashen

✦ AI summary

Ashen is an open world co-op action RPG where you play as a wanderer seeking a home, engaging in stamina-based combat across a brutal and ever-shifting landscape while occasionally encountering other players in seamless passive multiplayer. The game stands out by making every choice and environmental detail matter—from recruiting survivors to build your town with unique crafting skills, to studying creatures and planning strategies rather than rushing through combat.

Ashen is an open world co-op action RPG about a wanderer in search of a place to call home.

Passive Co-Op Multiplayer
As you adventure through Ashen, you'll occasionally encounter other players in a massive open world, akin to the passive multiplayer of Journey. It's up to you to decide how to deal with them - fight together against evil, invite them into your party or simply ignore them.

Souls with a Twist
Ashen is faithful to the "souls" genre of stamina-based combat, introducing players to a punishing yet satisfyingly vast world. But here’s the twist - no two gameplay experiences are alike. Whether you’re exploring bogs, investigating a fjord or pillaging an old palace, where you are at any given moment will dramatically alter the course of your adventure. It's a brutal open world; you're just living in it.

Creatures + Combat
Ashen has no shortage of dangerous encounters, from hostile enemies to indigenous creatures. You'll be rewarded for studying the environment and its inhabitants, planning your adventure rather than flying by the seat of your pants. The flora and fauna within the world aren't just fantastical; they're often fatal. Each confrontation, no matter how trivial, has potentially dire consequences.

Crafting is Key
As you discover survivors, you'll have the choice to invite them to your Town. But these aren't mere adventurers - they're potential collaborators, bringing a plethora of crafting skills, from blacksmithing to foraging expertise, in tow.

Story + Score
Famed fantasy author Mark Lawrence (The Broken Empire trilogy) and renowned band Foreign Fields collaborated closely with the development team at A44 to craft a cohesive and unique narrative and sound.

✦ AI summary

Ashen is a souls-like with an appealing minimalist aesthetic that many players find enjoyable and atmospheric, but it suffers from inconsistent difficulty design with poorly balanced late-game sections that rely on overwhelming mob encounters rather than thoughtful challenge, along with technical issues like crashes and controversial post-game monetization that frustrate completion-focused players.

To preface this, beat every fromsoft game and numerous souls likes yada yada. I've played some BAD souls likes. This game was passable until the artificial difficulty kicks in at the seat of the matriarch when they have a long labyrinth full of mobs that overwhelm you in the dark. I don't care what anyone says, this level is not good design. It's trash because the devs don't know how to make a challenging encounter without putting you through a gauntlet of ♥♥♥♥ enemies all at once. This really turned an alright game into a bad one. Reminds me of The Ritual path in Demon's souls if the ritual path had a head injury.

Had this game on my wishlist for a long while and got it via a bundle. Knew it was mixed, but wanted to give it a shot anyways. Had fun with it, but the mixed rating is understandable. Thought of 100%-ing it for a little while, but saw that I had to replay the whole game on cripple mode and pay for a dlc that would have cost me almost more than the bundle I bought. Figured it wasn't worth my time. For the rest of the game as a whole it is fairly simple. Soul's Like, minimalistic (unfortunatly also in enemy combat design) and vague come to mind. I realy loved the visual changes throughout the game. It made the game feel so alive to me. It felt like a somewhat chill game to me. Only started having trouble near the end of the game. lastly I felt that Items that I could pick up started to feel very useless in the end. There are better games worth your time, but if you got the game in a bundle or free somehow, give it a shot.
