Galactic bore fest am I right?

Once upon a time, in the dark ages of space 4x strategy, after the fall of "Master of Orion III" and the ascendency of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, there were few space 4x games. Galactic Civilization filled a niche for, then, modern systems. It has many of the staples of 4x design: a plethora of strategic choices, political and economic systems, a morality system, and a roster of cool aliens with personas that show in their attitudes and behaviours. For a time GalCiv was seemingly a diamond in the rough. A neat little 4x strategy game from a plucky indie developer, but that was a long time ago... Honestly looking back on it now I don't know why I bothered with this game. It's very clear that the developers have 'cheated' a lot of behavior for the AI to the point that they may as well be playing a completely different game than you. AIs will spread willy-nilly in ways that would absolutely crush your economy, all the meanwhile having high morale, and fielding fleets of dozens and dozens of ships that players would/could not afford. Galactic Civilizations I: Ultimate Edition, developed and published by Stardock Entertainment, is a product of an earlier era of strategy design, one that prioritizes thoughtful systems and deliberate pacing over accessibility and visual flair. As a complete package that includes the base game alongside the Altarian Prophecy expansion, it offers a full look at the series’ beginnings—a foundation that would later evolve into something far more refined in its sequel. While it may feel rough and dated by modern standards, it still carries a distinct charm rooted in its emphasis on long-term planning and player-driven outcomes. The game follows the familiar structure of the 4X genre, placing players in control of a fledgling interstellar civilization competing for dominance in a largely unclaimed galaxy. Expansion, technological research, diplomacy, and warfare all play crucial roles, but what stands out is the freedom to approach victory from multiple angles. Military conquest is only one path; players can instead lean into cultural influence, economic growth, or diplomatic alliances to secure their place as the dominant power. crashes too much, has way too many issues with having to manually figure out the display and run components windows considers sketchy. I loved this game but sadly unless it's actually made windows compatible again it's just a waste of time.
