Smalland: Survive the Wilds

This was a good game in early access. The world has a feel of wonder and whimsy that grabbed me in a way that Grounded did not. If they had stopped at early access launch and added nothing else my opinion of this game would be higher. Unfortunately, it seems like they immediately lost the plot, adding in disconnected systems that never really go anywhere. These are some of the reasons I am sad to have wasted my time finishing this game: - The armor system is designed in tiers but armor within the same tier is basically cosmetic. - The animals are also designed in tiers and levels matter almost nothing compared to tier. Most of the pets you can tame are or become irrelevant. - The magic system (wyrd) is entirely missable. The pieces of it are hidden in caverns in an end game zone and you can entirely beat the game without it. - Hatching eggs at your base causes raids on the base. The static defenses are terrible and the building pieces are weak. Animals rush the base and destroy it and higher tier building materials barely add any hitpoints. - Character damage feels pitiful compared to pet damage. - Consumables seemed like they were going to have variations and there are a bunch of…

Smalland: Survive the Wilds is one of those games where I really like the concept, but the actual execution never gave me a reason to care about continuing. The idea of playing as a tiny creature in a huge world immediately reminded me of Arthur and the Invisibles, and the game is genuinely beautiful, with the scale of the world making the concept work visually. The problem is that once I started playing, I found very little underneath that presentation that kept me interested. The biggest issue for me is how poorly the game handles exploration and progression. The map is quite large, but there is no proper fast travel system, so moving between distant areas means spending a lot of time walking. The Great Trees could have been a perfect solution to this. After climbing and capturing a tree, the game could have allowed us to use balloons to travel between captured trees, while still making the initial climb an important part of exploration. Instead, moving your Tree Base to another tree removes the previous one as a useful location, meaning you still have to walk back across the map whenever you need to return somewhere. Smalland: Survive the Wilds is what happens when you take the survival‑crafting formula, shrink you down to bug size, and say “congrats, now a puddle is a lake and a garden spider is a raid boss.” I went in expecting “Grounded but smaller” and came out fully convinced that grasshoppers are the true endgame mounts. The vibe You play as a tiny humanoid in a huge, dangerous backyard‑style world full of ants, wasps, beetles, spiders, and other “absolutely not my size” creatures. Everything feels massive: you climb skyscraper‑tall plants, cross puddle‑sized lakes, and hide under leaves like they’re tactical cover. The atmosphere is dense and beautiful, with weather, seasons, and a soundtrack that makes even gathering twigs feel dramatic. Why I loved it The scale is genius. Ordinary stuff becomes epic: a rainstorm is an event, a mushroom is a landmark, and a cockroach is a mid‑game boss you absolutely respect. Taming and riding bugs slaps. Unlock recipes to tame and ride grasshoppers, damselflies, spiders, and more; suddenly you’re not just surviving, you’re commuting on insect public transport. Crafting with actual depth.
