About Dear Esther

✦ AI summary

Explore a mysterious, desolate island while listening to fragmented letters read aloud, piecing together a haunting story of love, loss, and ambiguity. Every playthrough unfolds differently with randomized narrative elements and stunning visuals that prioritize atmospheric storytelling over traditional gameplay mechanics.

“A deserted island…a lost man…memories of a fatal crash…a book written by a dying explorer.”

Two years in the making, the highly anticipated Indie remake of the cult mod Dear Esther arrives on PC. Dear Esther immerses you in a stunningly realised world, a remote and desolate island somewhere in the outer Hebrides. As you step forwards, a voice begins to read fragments of a letter: "Dear Esther..." - and so begins a journey through one of the most original first-person games of recent years. Abandoning traditional gameplay for a pure story-driven experience, Dear Esther fuses its beautiful environments with a breathtaking soundtrack to tell a powerful story of love, loss, guilt and redemption.

Forget the normal rules of play; if nothing seems real here, it’s because it may just be all a delusion. What is the significance of the aerial -- What happened on the motorway -- is the island real or imagined -- who is Esther and why has she chosen to summon you here? The answers are out there, on the lost beach, the windswept cliffs and buried in the darkness of the tunnels beneath the island… Or then again, they may just not be, after all…

Dear Esther is supported by Indie Fund.

Key features:

  • Every play-through a unique experience, with randomly generated audio, visuals and events.
  • Explore Incredible environments that push the Source engine to new levels of beauty.
  • A poetic, semi-randomised story like you've never experienced in a game before.
  • Stunning soundtrack featuring world-class musicians.
  • An uncompromisingly inventive game delivered to the highest AAA standards.

Soundtrack

Jessica Curry's haunting and beautiful soundtrack to Dear Esther, now available on Steam, has been a hit with gamers and critics alike. Reviewers have said ""Curry's score reflects the player's feelings without oppressively instructing them. Exquisitely constructed, both sonically and visually" (Eurogamer), "as beautiful as the game is, it’d be remiss not to mention Curry’s atmospheric soundtrack...impossible to ignore." (Edge), "spellbinding, fascinating aural landscape: a resounding success" (Square Enix), "Curry's delicate & understated musical score achieves a level of excellence. It's the ultimate achievement of composition." (Bitgamer). The soundtrack was shortlisted for the Excellence in Audio award at the Independent Games Festival 2012

✦ AI summary

Dear Esther is a walking simulator that pioneered the genre, offering players a haunting exploration of a Scottish island accompanied by atmospheric narration and environments rather than traditional gameplay mechanics. Those who appreciate narrative-driven experiences and environmental storytelling find it evocative and immersive, though players seeking combat, puzzles, or conventional interaction will find little to engage with. Reviews suggest it appeals to a specific audience looking for a contemplative, short experience rather than a traditional game.

This review has sort of spoilers. When I was eleven I played a mod for Half-Life 2 called Dear Esther. I was interested in it because of how strange the name of the game was and I thought the name "Esther" was beautiful. The premise is simple. You wash up on an empty island in the Hebrides (collection of islands off the coast of Scotland) and walk. There are no puzzles, no enemies, no inventory, and no jump. It's the game people mean when they say "walking simulator," a term that started as an insult and became a genre. Dear Esther, in all practicality, is the first true walking simulator. The island is gorgeous: grey shingle beaches, a glowing cave system that feels like the inside of a body, and a red light blinking on a distant radio tower that you spend the whole game walking toward. It takes about two hours. However, Dear Esther is a game which shines because of what it attempts (and in my opinion, succeeds) to do: be a brief, but serious, literary work of art. As you walk, a man reads fragments of letters to the titular Esther, a woman killed in a car crash on the M5 Motorway, in England. Around that grief, the narrator wraps other stories. There's a stolen library book ab…

I played this 14 years ago. It sucked. Walking simulators were a plague that I look back on with what you zoomers call "cringe". Go ahead ahead and give me that stupid jester emote. I couldn't possibly imagine respecting the opinion of anyone who liked this.

It's an evocative experience. Many people will call this game a "walking simulation". And while it's true there isn't much in the way of actual gameplay, if you like to be told a story through narration and environment. Or simply like to explore haunting places - Dear Esther is for you. It's a short experience, but an immersive one.
