Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual!

Goated game can't wait for the part where Sam And Max make out

I've played and loved the old Telltale games and knew I was in for a series of point and click adventures and mini games. When you realise that, the game becomes less of a worry about pacing and more an enjoyment of the duo's delinquent antics and simple VR mechanic games. Some of the mechanics could use some polish, but overall a fun adventure if you love the franchise.

All the reviews of this game not being up to snuff are not wrong in the slightest. While the novelty of a first person Sam & Max game is something I adore, actually experiencing it is another (and less exciting) story. The plot of the game is relatively uninteresting, the new characters don't strike me as memorable (I could barely remember Helios aside from him being "Greek guy from Sam & Max"), the action is dull and the gameplay is monotonous. The worst is some bugs and the unclear level design. The convenience store level (which doesn't feature Bosco or the Snuckey's employee for some reason? Big missed opportunity) had me stumbling around until I needed to look up a walkthrough. The "bop-it" style minigames were the WORST, though. Constant missed inputs, occasionally breaking, and even got to the point where I had to restart the entire mission just because the actual in-game model bugged. All of this culminated into me accidentally exiting the long-winded final act and booting myself back to the office. I love Sam & Max

"Hey guys, what if we take a our loveable Point and Click protagonists and instead make a series of VR arcade games where Sam and Max say the same half-baked lines over and over again?" If you're absolutely foaming at the mouth for more Sam and Max content you could run through the main game in about 3 hours, and it is admittedly nice to see the iconic office in 3D, but what you're left with after that is bland, nauseating minigames that only make vague references to previous titles. Act 3 actually does introduce a unique location with mildly interesting puzzles, and I only wish that could have been the entire game instead of what we got.

As a HUGE fan of this franchise, I can't recommend this game to anyone who isn't as equally dedicated as I am. Some of the dialogue is funny, and the plot is gripping enough, but the controls and frequent bugs--along with the inconsistent visuals and lazy animations--make the game pretty frustrating. The voice actors did an incredible job of course, but unfortunately Sam and Max seem completely content to constantly talk over each other and skip through multiple lines, and the subtitles are often riddled with typos or just straight-up don't match what the characters are saying. tl;dr - Great franchise, but don't play this game in particular unless you're a genuine die-hard fan with money to burn
