I'm impressed.

AvoidVania is a strange little game that mixes a top down runner with Metroidvania ideas, and the fact that I play as a cat makes the whole thing even more unusual. I am drawn into a castle because of the smell of food, only to end up trapped inside with monsters, traps and a maze of rooms. The important thing is that I cannot fight anything. My cat is fast, so I have to survive by running, jumping, dashing and finding my way around instead. I like that the game builds almost everything around this one idea because it gives it a personality straight away. The movement is easily the best part for me. Instead of stopping to fight every enemy, I have to watch what is happening around me and work out when I can safely move through an area. The dash and jump abilities give me enough options to get around traps and dangerous sections, and some of the challenges are built around getting through an area quickly. I like the feeling of barely getting past something that would have been an easy enemy to kill in another game. Here, simply surviving is the challenge.
