Love Lock

hi!! so this is gonna be a long review. i'm a yapper and i'm VERY passionate about games like these specifically. also, it's my first attempt at a Real Review, so be nice to me, okay? ( •ω•) PREFACE: i don't know if there's a one-word genre description for games like this, but it's a very 'if you know you know' kind of thing. when i say this game is 'like Boyfriend to Death', if you know what Boyfriend to Death is, you probably understand what i'm getting at, you know? okay, so with that being said: this is very much one of those games. they're relatively niche, so seeing a new one is always a nice surprise. the 'gore/torture-based VN' angle as a whole tends to be focused primarily on male protagonists and female victims. it's in this specific 'bottom'focused' subgenre where that can vary a lot--for example, this game (and its most close comparisons, Boyfriend to Death and The Price of Flesh) offer gender selection and/or pronouns selection and, uh, private bits selection, so you can be whatever victim you want to be! Love Lock was a good experience overall! It's clear that the game was developed with a lot of care and passion. One of its biggest strengths, in my opinion, is the significant impact that every choice has on the story, something I highly value in visual novels. The characters are charming in their own unique ways, and with the variety of fetishes explored you will certainly find something that appeals to you. I recommend the game for those who enjoy horror porn. 9/10

This game has a lot of potential, and I really want to like it. I love disturbing horror games like this, and I've been looking for ones similar to the old Boyfriend to Death games. In my search, this came up. I do like the take on it, how you're living your own life, and how your choices determine which route you end up on as opposed to choosing the character. I also adore the sense of dread it builds up, not knowing who or when one of the '"dateables" will kidnap you. There's a lot of characters and a lot of different options. The problems I personally have start with the writing. The character writing is.. bad. I'm not expecting realism, but it would be nice for the characters to make actual human decisions. There's a lot of typos, and the way the characters interact feels so stilted and off putting. It really ruins the immersion, at least in my opinion. The routes themselves are also extremely short. Once the player character is taken in by a "dateable" the actual events to occur are very quick, and the endings are way too abrupt. Spoilers for those who care, but the first example of this to come to mind comes in the form of the character Adam's route. There's a few sequences…

I'm really trying to get into this, but there are SO. MANY. SPELLING MISTAKES. How hard would it have been to have this quality checked before asking me to spend 28 dollars on it? I can forgive a cheap game on itch.io for one or two, but this is really immersion-breaking. Maybe the story will get better and I'll be able to overlook these, but they're frequent. I'll change my review if the story ends up something amazing and worth it, but it's not really looking great so far. EDIT: So far, generic art (2 characters have the same ♥♥♥♥... hoping the ♥♥♥♥♥ vary at some point because this is lazy as ♥♥♥♥) and really generic endings. No suspense at all, each one perfectly predictable. This game is a scam, don't buy it.
