Quartermain and the Cult of Cthulhu

Lots of story and gameplay! Definitely a lot of fun! Still got a ways to go but I really enjoyed what I've seen so far! Really a lot of fun!

This game almost feels like it comes from an alternate history timeline where Ken Silverman (creator of the Build engine), the people who developed Blood (1997) and Sandy Petersen (Lovecraftian influences) join id Software immediately after Wolfenstein 3D is completed in 1992. Consequently, id Software develops this game as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny and the development of Doom and Doom II never happens. Now, back to a more serious review. The levels of this game look like a hybrid of Wolfenstein 3D and Blood levels. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing and creates a memorable atmosphere. There are numerous spoken lines in the game and some are quite good but others could be improved. There is a mix of sprites and voxels, though some of the sprites can break immersion, like the car sprite at the beginning of the game. Later on, there are tank voxels which look nicer. The gameplay is fast paced and progression is aided by most enemies being quite weak and having slow reaction times to spotting the player. In the early game it is quite easy to avoid taking damage. For it's low price, there is a surprising amount of good content. I will say some of the enemies and weapons felt a little strangely balanced, the heavy machine gun was a weapon I ended up not really using because it felt so weak in comparison to even the colt, a full mag isn't even enough to cut down a thunder mage. The shotgun is bafflingly inaccurate and can't be used to cut down swarms of enemies, unlike the shotgun enemy's version which is just a tight burst that deals quite a bit of damage. There were also odd almost gimmicks that appeared and disappeared just as quick. Armor appears in like one level and then just vanishes again.

Yeah, it's trash, but it's fun. For thee bux you can do a lot worse. This game captures a lot of what made 90's corridor shooters fun, and a lot of what made them forgotten. The arsenal is doom clone in the wrong order. The levels are abstract at best. Enemies are seemingly dotted all over the place. Don't take it seriously, and you will have a good time.

REALLY ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ GOOD FOR 3$ YOU HONESTLY CANT BEAT IT THE STORY IS GOOD ENOUGH TO BE INTERESTING BUT NOT OVERBEARING PRETTY SIMPLE BUT STILL FUN 7/10 THE LEVELS ALL LOOK AMAZING AND ARE INTUITIVE FOR THE MOST PART BUT ABOUT AN HOUR FROM THE ENDING I STARTED GETTING LOST A LOT MORE AND THE FACT THERE IS NO MAP DOES NOT HELP 7/10 THE ENEMYS ARE ALL AMAZING THE SPRITES ARE VERY DETAILED AND SOME OF THEIR ATTACKS ARE HITSCAN BUT THEY USUALLY HAVE A SIGN THEY ARE ABOUT TO FIRE 9/10 THE GUNS ALL FEEL GOOD PRETTY STANDARD BUT GOD DOES THE REVOLVER FEEL IMMACULATE DEFINETELY THE STANDOUT OF THE WEAPONS 10/10 THE MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS ARE ALSO PRETTY GOOD THE SOUND EFFECTS ARE PUNCHY BUT NOTHING SPECIAL VERY DECENT 6/10 THE MUSIC IS REALLY NICE NOT JUST A WHOLE BUNCH OF METAL BUT STILL UPBEAT 8/10 OVERALL PRETTY SHORT GAME WITH SOME REPLAYABILITY IF YOU HAVE A FREE WEEKEND THIS IS DEFINETELY WORTH IT ALTHOUGH I DO THINK IT WENT ON A LITTLE TO LONG MAYBE BY A LEVEL OR TWO BUT THATS NOT REALLY A BAD THING 8/10
