428: Shibuya Scramble

Finally got 100% achievements, so here's my review. Overall, this is an incredibly solid text-based game with a surprisingly deep level of replayability. The gameplay design is genuinely impressive — even by today's standards, the mechanics still hold up extremely well. The story is tightly constructed, with one twist after another, and the pacing keeps you hooked from start to finish. The plot twists are also genuinely unexpected: [spoiler]Who would've guessed that Canaan was actually an impostor, and that she was Alphard all along? [/spoiler] That being said, the biggest flaw is the character writing. A lot of the characters feel very formulaic and stereotypically "anime". This issue doesn't hurt the main story too much, but the extra Canaan anime-style chapters were honestly painful to sit through. The lack of realism was extremely noticeable — it felt like something written by people with zero real-world experience who had never left their own bubble. The writing was so awkward and disconnected from reality that it became unintentionally hilarious. Such a fun time! Gameplay-wise I think this must be revolutionary at the time it was released— well-written and adapted to a video game format. It's entertaining to see how the story unfolds especially during JUMPs. Although sometimes the mechanic feels a little gimmicky and forced, especially when the keyword is not related to the story beat.

I’ve owned this one for awhile but never really played it until recently. Mostly because it’s a live action sort of work(I normally play only stylized games). Plus, this VN is definitely is a slow burn: so it took me a few tries to get hooked on it. However, once you get past the style of this VN: the writing is pretty masterful. There’s a lot of twists and turns; and It’s hard NOT to get attached to the characters. Currently: I’m laying down here at 6:22am, I haven’t slept yet… and I have just finished bawling my eyes out(+ blowing my nose) after having read ‘Heartbeat in the spring’. For the record: I’ve played tons of games and rarely cry at any of them. So it surprised me greatly that I cried that much(and how much my nose was running). So because of that; I definitely have to give it a recommend. It’s worth a read if you have the time and patience to read it through.
