Ace Attorney Investigations Collection

Oh boy, I have 500-600 words of angry notes from the time my brain was turned on during this collection. I fully gave up near the end of the first game and just started skipping things. This is my time to SHINE! To preface, I really wanted to like this game. I played it after I played the original trilogy (which I LOOOVE) and now I've also played AJ and TGAA. There is a lot here I like. The writing is still pretty good, there are some genuinely really entertaining characters (Meele in 1.2 is amazing), and there was one part that was so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cute that it tempted me to forgive everything else. Unfortunately, the gameplay loop of this spinoff is flawed on a fundamental level. (Don't worry, if you don't agree with this part I have complaints about the poor logic as well.) Ace Attorney is built on the very deliberate rhythm of investigation and trial: investigation is where you introduce the setting and characters, build up mystery, and gradually increase tension. The trial is where you both release that original tension by giving answers to many of the unsolved mysteries, and keep up the level of tension by showing you how little you know about the real situation. As a long time Ace Attorney fan, I finally got around to playing this collection, including the second game that was never localized for non-Japanese audiences before, and I am so glad I got to finally experience it! While the mechanics are slightly different from the main line entries of the franchise, they are just as fun, and I would argue that the story is even better! Other Ace Attorney games usually consist of multiple largely unrelated cases that are set weeks or months apart, but the Investigations games take part over the timespan of less than a month (with the exception of some related flashbacks) and while they are technically split into cases, these cases are closely interconnected and form one whole narrative. Also kudos to the second game for having a twist in the final case that I genuinely did not see coming! Absolutely amazing game that is well worth playing and I am holding out hope that one day we will finally get another game in the series – either the main line or an Investigations game. (Please Capcom, I am begging you, it's been ten years)

I loved Miles before. I still love Miles after. What else is there to say. The game gives you more Miles in the universe of Ace Attorney.
