It's very good for its price. Buy it at a discount, and you will never regret it! :)1 found this helpful
Could have been very good - even great - Panzer General follow up with neat additional features, but the main campaign is impossible to finish due to bugs. Not recommended.1 found this helpful
Army General is a traditional, systems-heavy turn-based strategy game that deliberately embraces the design philosophy of classic computer wargames, prioritizing operational depth and historical flavor over accessibility or modern presentation. Developed by Phobetor and published by Phobetor alongside Plug In Digital, the game places players in command roles during World War II campaigns centered on North Africa and the Mediterranean, focusing on large-scale maneuvers, logistical decisions, and long-term planning rather than moment-to-moment spectacle. From the outset, it is clear that Army General is aimed squarely at experienced strategy players who enjoy deliberate pacing and granular control. The core of the experience revolves around commanding armies on a hex-based map, where positioning, terrain, and unit composition are far more important than flashy abilities or scripted events. Campaigns draw inspiration from historical operations such as the Italian invasion of Egypt and the advance of the Afrika Korps, offering scenarios that emphasize supply lines, flanking maneuvers, and combined arms tactics. Battles are not isolated skirmishes but parts of broader operational objec…
To start, I do not enjoy these games, and I got it for free, so the chances of me sticking with it were very low to begin with. For this review, I'd like to take you through my thought process during the few minutes I played it. Start campaign. Ok, they just toss you into the game with a bunch of stuff to click on. I got my vehicles to move. I made some tanks appear which I managed to blow something up with. Clicked on a bunch of stuff, made an airplane appear. Moved airplane. Airplane disappears. I click on an enemy. It turns into my airplane. Clicked on airplane. Turns back into enemy. Wait, is that an enemy? Why can't I blow it up like the other two things that looked just like it? Click on some more stuff. Nothing's happening. Manage to end my turn. Enemy turn, nothing happens. Cool, my turn again. Some infantry randomly show up. Nice, maybe from clicking on a picture of infantry guys from the last turn? Click on some more stuff, can only move a few of my people this time. Blow up one more thing. Wait, didn't I have a plane. Where is it...oh there it is. What does this thing do besides turn invisible when I click on it. Boy I wish there was a tutorial. I don't know what…
IMO this game, or at least the idea of it, is better than games like PanzerKorps and other copy-pasta oversimplified Slitherine wargames, primarily because it actually models officers for its "units". It adds a lot to immersion, and makes you feel like a commander of men and not mindless drones. The ability to customize your units with attachments et al also adds to the feeling of units being "alive" and unique instead of clones. However the developer gave up on it too soon. Should have expanded on this formula with sequels and DLCs. And of course, improved production values (UI, graphics etc) which are quite atrocious. We need more wargames like this one.. Tired of so many wargames and military strategy games ignoring the role of Individual leaders - officers, captains, generals et al, which is a fundamental and decisive element of warfare.
It's hard to go wrong for $3! This is very similar to Panzer General, and has a fairly easy learning curve. It isn't going to set the gaming world on fire, but I have seen far worse! If military war gaming is your thing without bogging down in micromanagement this is a good one
