About Box Dungeons
Box Dungeons is a puzzle game inspired by classic tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons and turn-based dungeon crawlers such as the various spin-offs of the Mystery Dungeon series.
The game combines many of the expected elements of an RPG with the simple yet versatile mechanics of a sliding puzzle. Players control a character who slides through rooms to attack enemies, collect treasure, and complete the main objective of each stage to progress to the next.
Each playable character has their own abilities that they unlock in their skill tree as they complete rooms and gain experience (EXP). These abilities modify how players can solve puzzles, with many puzzles requiring the use of these specific skills.
At the end of each dungeon, players encounter the Boss room. Here, they must utilize the abilities they have acquired throughout their progression to face off against the Boss, who possesses unique special abilities for that fight.
- A turn-based system by which enemies make moves and take actions every turn following set patterns, creating puzzles that are in constant shift and require the player to identify these patterns and plan their path accordingly in order to solve them.
- The dungeons’ floors include environmental hazards and interactive elements that the player can either avoid or use in their favor, perhaps pushing an enemy into a spike pit or crushing them with a rolling boulder.
Interactables also includes collectible elements, such as gold coins and treasure chests, that the player must collect in order to complete “side quests” for extra skill points.
- Each floor has objectives besides just clearing them. These “side quests” require extra planning to complete, adding a mostly optional layer of difficulty beyond simply completing the stage.
- Their objectives vary, including collecting loot, finishing the stage under a set amount of turns or even dispatching an enemy with an Overkill by dealing more damage than their maximum HP.
- Each player character has their own unique skill tree from which they unlock new abilities, both passive and active, that either allow new ways to solve puzzles or are required to clear them.
- Each dungeon is tailored for their corresponding character’s skill set, with distinct environment, enemies, and mechanics to match classic themes for both fantasy TTRPGs and classic RPGs, such as the Goblin Cave.
The battle-hardened Hobgoblin can “Parry” attacks from the front, reducing the damage they take.
And there are many more.
- On the last floor of every dungeon, the player is challenged to a Boss battle, such as the raging Goblin Warband!
Those stages involve beating a powerful foe designed with unique mechanics tailored to be tackled by the skills available to the corresponding player character.

Which together with a few serious bugs ultimately spoil what fun there is to be had. Gameplay gains engaging complexity from a mix of standard & Sokoban influenced mechanics. Though playing is hindered by a UI that needs to be reworked to make levels easier to read while pondering solutions. As would adding better mouse support to compliment the reliance on keyboard commands would make it easier to play, rather than needing three hands to operate controls. Until issues with accessibility, the UI & bugs have been addressed, it remains a FLAWED experience. At least for this bemused & confused puzzle fan. Slide puzzle meets dungeon crawler, a surprisingly fun combination. I am usually not into puzzle games but the classic rpg aesthetic and elements made me want to give it a try, and I am glad I did. The rpg mechanics such as skills and a turn based "combat" works really well for this game, and the stage designs really make you think. I would recommend this game for anyone that just want simple game to chill and put their head to work. I got some good laughs with my wife as we argue the best moves to make. I am enjoying this game much more than I thought I would.3 found this helpful
If you like to THINK, this is the game for you. Box Dungeons has surprisingly hard puzzles that start getting really hard quite soon if you want to achieve all the challenges in every level. Not only that, it requires a lot of brain to figure out if you even have what is takes (in terms of unlocked skills) to master the level you're in. There are some small things that can eventually get better (I'd love to switch angles using the mouse, for instance), but those do not compromise the experience at all. Now, excuse me while I try to destroy all the boxes on this level for the 20th time.3 found this helpful
I’ve been playing Box Dungeons for a while now, trying to complete all the extra missions, and what I can say is that the game really surprised me. For anyone who enjoys puzzles, the difficulty ramps up nicely, with the later stages becoming genuinely challenging. The game has a time-rewind mechanic that lets you fix wrong moves, but as an extra challenge, I’ve been trying to clear the stages without using it, and it has become a real personal challenge. The art style is also really good. As the name suggests, everything is made to look like boxes, but the game doesn’t go for the overly minimalist style some games use. It still keeps a lot of personality, with very distinct environments and characters. The game doesn’t have a huge number of levels, but for the price and the quality of what’s here, it almost feels unfair that it’s so cheap. I hope they add more levels and characters in the future, as the game seems to suggest. If you like turn-based games, puzzles, or dungeon crawlers, this is absolutely worth checking out. Super underrated indie gem.2 found this helpful
Good puzzles, and rather good looking. Unfortunately, no software engineer was available for the UI and an enshitification engineer was recruited instead. Thereupon the thing is a real pain to play; all the good work ends up wasted. It cannot be played with a mouse, and it obviously should be. It cannot be played with a gamepad either; the Steam layout can't compensate the use of random keys (I'm going to give it one last shot if I can manage full customisation before swooning from boredom.) All you get is the rotten WASD scheme with extra random keys, from people who never looked at keyboards and boorishly copy 50 years old bad habits. No options, no config files, no remapping possible. What's baffling is that all keys are permanently displayed on screen, including correctly oriented direction arrows, but none of them act as a clickable button - except for Undo and Redo. What's even more baffling is that the arrows do have a button animation, just no actual effect. It demonstrates a half-arsed port from pocket phones. If the input ever receives a professional treatment, I'll likely update this to a recommendation. The current state, however, while not exactly unplayable, is a …1 found this helpful
