Captain Starshot

[h1] Roguelike space shooter. Idea is nice, defeat exterior guns to board enemy vessel. Then second part of the game begins, where you explore rooms to exterminate alien crew or just blow up the main generator. Some upgrades and perks are obtained throughout the game. Overall very short, execution that is shooting part is a bit dull and repetitive, just circling around enemy until they're finished. I like the visuals. On my playthrough I did not manage to defeat last boss. Probably might play this one once more. [/h1]

"Captain Starshot" is one of literally thousands of student projects infesting Steam. It's from Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Sure, it helps their marketing and helps the students feel good about themselves, but this is another case of a business putting themselves before the needs of gamers. At first glance this really does come across as a fully fledged professionally made game... but it isn't. There's only a couple of game modes as you control the crew of a spaceship and engage in 2D top down combat and then board enemy space vessels which switches you to a 2.5D ground combat game mode... if that was all fleshed out and attached to a…

Nice game with decent concept even though it gets repetitive after about 15 minutes, I still enjoyed it. Achievements are very buggy and takes extra time to finish but still, overall, nice game. Good job and good luck in your careeers!

For a free game, its good and its a quick way to relieve boredom without becoming too invested in a game. But the game quickly be omes repetitive with the same enemies, just more of them, untill there are so many enemies your whole crew dies to a bullet hell. All the missions are the same. Shoot out turrets on a ship Board ship Clear ship Repeat. It does not matter what mission you select as all of them have nearly the same outcome.
