Children of the Nile: Enhanced Edition

I can't describe in words how many hours I have lost to this game and how painful it is for me to play right now.. I played this game when it first came out and had way too many "Oh ♥♥♥♥, I have to work in the morning!" moments with it. Functionally, it's still viable, but technically it has fallen way behind the times. Whoever owns this IP now, needs to wake up. You're still selling this game and taking money from people, but you haven't modernized it in any way. If you read the discussions, there are folks who can't even play the game due to CtD failures. For some, it won't even launch, let alone crash. The game does not support modern monitors, HDR or any of the modern basic graphics settings. You have to modify the .cfg just to tell the game to run in windowed mode. They released an overhaul update in ~2014 or so, it's time for a refresh. At this point, they're just stealing money from gamers who want a sniff of nostalgia, or maybe are trying to pass on a legacy to the next generation. Do better.

I want a remake.

Children of the Nile is a much more relaxed city builder than games like Frostpunk, Caesar, Pharaoh, Zeus, or even Against the Storm. There are no roguelike mechanics or constant pressure—it's simply about building and managing an Ancient Egyptian civilization across roughly twenty campaign scenarios. Difficulty varies from easy to hard, making it accessible to a wide audience without ever becoming overwhelmingly difficult. The game's biggest strength is how alive its society feels. Instead of placing anonymous workers, you manage an actual social hierarchy. Farmers produce food, priests provide healthcare and religious services, scribes collect taxes and manage trade, overseers supervise construction and resource gathering, commanders train armies, and many other professions all play their own role in keeping the kingdom running. Prestige is a central mechanic. Building monuments, pyramids, obelisks, statues, and temples isn't just for decoration—it allows your civilization to grow and unlock more high-ranking citizens. The economy is also unique, with merchants, workshops, world map trade, and local production chains all interacting in ways that make the city feel organic rathe…

This is a borderline positive. Placing and building mechanics are a bit clunky and the 'plot' did not hold my attention beyond some hours playing it. 60/100

It's not a bad city-builder. What's not to love about ancient Egypt?

Such a fun city builder. The only difficulty is that it caps out at some point, making it very difficult to sustain your settlement.
