CHWÆST: A Creeping Parasite Horror

It's... alright. Beat the whole game in 40min and there was almost no story to it. This feels like it's a demo or should be free to be honest. It's not bad, and I enjoy a short bite-sized game, but there's no meat to it. I'm surprised because even though it's a solo dev, they have made many other fleshed out games, but this one is disappointingly vapid.

Fun little game. Only critique I got is the running worms were a little to hard/annoying to pick up. Fun time for the price though! Hope there will be more games in this universe!

I had fun with this. It's a short game, but I think the price is fair for the length of the game. My playtime says 35 minutes, and I was able to complete the whole game and unlock all of the achievements in that time. What really stood out to me though was how mechanically developed the game is for such a short title. Water sounds good and slows you down, the lantern you hold swings around as you move and has real momentum to it. There's an inventory system, stamina, jumping, light mechanics, crouching and crawling... It definitely feels like some of these were kind of put in as tests for the developer to flex their muscles; the lamp for example you can collect fuel for, turn on and off, refill, and it even dims the less fuel there is in it, but overall collecting fuel doesn't add a ton to the game, you never seem to be in real danger of running out and there is some ambient lighting that keeps you from being blind without the lantern on. But I also don't think it really detracted from the experience either. Atmosphere is nice and definitely had a creepy vibe to it even if it's not going to be the "scariest game ever." Super short but its not bad. Easy achievement farm while being a decent entry into a spooky game. Great for the kids.

I've got some friends that have trouble playing horror games, this is one I would probably recommend to someone like that to ease them into the genre. Otherwise, if you already play horror games, this will probably feel exceptionally lukewarm. The game is made well; PSX style games are always pleasing to look at if that's an art style that appeals to you. Everything worked correctly in the game, it just wasn't a very effective or thought-provoking horror game. The set dressing was fun to go through; old abandoned mines with strange remnants of scientific endeavors and a lost unknown life form are always interesting. The only problem really is that there could have been more story-based environmental elements. There's a couple skeletons that you find that are likely people referenced in the few documents you do find, but thats about it. As for the mechanics, the game itself is actually a bit tedious. It mostly consists of searching for and collecting bugs that move in different ways (jumping, flying, running) and then feeding it to the biomass in order to progress.
