Citadale: The Legends Trilogy

Tl;dr - it is a collection of alright, short Castlevania clones. I am being extra nice because I see competent game design plagued by few instances of extremely punishment. These games are about 1 to 2 hours long if you progress steadily and in the case of Chapter 3 IF AND ONLY IF you use save states with the last double boss. Note that you can open the general menu with the game selection and the SAVE STATE FUNCTIONS by pressing H. It is not mentioned in the manual. It is useful because the Episode 1 ends up in a locked up main menu that you can only escape through the game select menu. The music overall is great and you get the soundtrack with the game Episode I Gate of Souls is about 1.0 hours long if you use save states. Due to the high boss damage and the unreliable whip, the Potion sub-weapon is useless. It features needlessly brutal and frustrating boss fights that make you fight Goliath with a sling that often whiffs even when it should not. This is possibly the worst Castlevania clone, I've ever played. Artwork, animations, and sound are nice, yet game mechanics make this game a major frustration fest, and really should have been fixed before release. Hitboxes literally with attacks feel short, getting hit, or even trying to pick up items. Enemy AI is even more annoying especially with bats, or flies homing in on you. You can even get attacked across other screens, or chased down by bats or flies. Even some enemies will wait till your near or on the same platform as them, with even some enemies doing damage from green blood from them. Boss fights are absolutely busted, and if it wasn't for the quick saves it would have been more infuriating. First game in the trilogy is ok for about two levels till the third part, which you can actually die jumping to high during the bridge section. Seriously how did this not get fixed? Had to tap the jump to avoid instant death due to high jumping, and the boss fight is even worse. Literally the boss only emerges from the ground, if you stand still for about a second. Hitting it also causes it to spawn annoying flying enemies that do a lot of damage, and extra damage due to the green…

I enjoyed these indie Castlevania clones despite the fact that there are obviously terrible things about them. This is a collection of three short games that each take about an hour and a half at most to beat by default. Chapter 1 has a hidden ending that's very difficult to unlock. If you do, you get a secret final level and a secret final boss that's actually probably the best fight in any of the games. Chapter 2 is the easiest of the games. I unlocked the hidden ending here as well, although it was much easier. Chapter 3 is structued as a level select and has no hidden endings... I thought it was the weakest of the three games. The graphics in all of these range from great to terrible, with some really bad MS Paint graphics and some beautiful looking sprites. The giant spider animation creeps me out of some reason. The music and sound effects are also very good and feel legitimately like "retro NES" sounds. All in all 100% completion took me about a day, there are no achievements but after beating all three and unlocking the better endings I found this experience much more satisfying than it should be. This game's inputs are so poorly written that if you quit and try to restart the controller basically won't work. These devs clearly don't know how to write basic DirectInput code. It's pretty sad. Wait for them to fix this before buying. Even basic indie games don't have this issue.
