Players are divided on this Contra revival. Those enjoying it praise the fun, challenging gameplay and solid controls, while critics complain about bloated new mechanics, excessive dialogue, control bugs on some setups, poor art direction that clashes with the series, and a short campaign that pushes repetitive play to unlock content. The core run-and-gun formula has merit, but design decisions and technical issues frustrate longtime fans who prefer the classic entries.
tl;dr: This is a 7/10 game. For the most part, it feels like an attempt at evolving the Contra formula we know and love, but instead it adds bloat, a story you're forced to play through to unlock goodies, worse music, worse levels (and honestly, just worse game design as a whole) and mishmashed art. Not recommended because I'd rather just play classic Contra, but this game isn't bad. Starting with the art: The character sprites aren't badly done per se, but they do NOT fit the aesthetic of Contra at all. Bill looks particularly bad here, which is a bummer because his original iteration is one of my favorite blond action hero designs. Lance isn't much better off, but his design is inoffensive at the very least. The 3d models are a bit better and are inoffensive, if a bit bland. One of the unlockable characters also feels extremely out of place contrasted with the rest of the crew - not in terms of art style, but more in regards to the setting. Overall doesn't hurt the game too much. The music is bland and forgettable. Thankfully the devs were awesome enough to include NES Contra's OST, as well as Castlevania and some others, as unlockables. Level design ranges from decent to bad.…5 found this helpful

is ok, game plays like original contra, but is a bit less strategic and more mayhem.. good on sale !
The game is great. Of course, it wants to draw from the classic original but this time with much better graphics, controls, mechanics. Yes, I think controls actually make sense now. Awesome on SteamDeck. And if you are too old to grind, level restarts let you just enjoy the gameplay. Don't get me wrong, the game is plenty hard and fun.
This is how you reboot a classic with modern graphics! Thank you to the developers! Wish an larger effort could be made to reboot old franchises of so many great side-scrolling games.
