Dark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe's The Gold Bug Collector's Edition

[h1]Too short, and too simple for most of us adults, but it might be fine for kids.[/h1] For such a lame HOG to bear the name of Edgar Allan Poe is a travesty. There is hardly any complexity that you might assume would come with it - the first part of the game has no backtracking, there are no collectables, no achievements, no card drops ergo no badges, and the puzzles are laughable. So there are a few hidden scenes (messes with a list of what to find) and a few deductive reasoning scenes (where you follow a domino effect to eventually end up with one item, but everything you find, you use to get that item). But some of these... whew! One that stood out for me as ridiculous was somehow pulling up a boat buried in a lake in a cave, and thoroughly searching it, so as to open an age-old chest to get... a pickaxe! What in tarnation! There are a few puzzles that might give you cause to stop and think but let me just add that my total play time includes going away from keyboard to get dinner and look after our pet bird, so I'm guessing the average hogger will finish in around the same time as me. This series seems to follow the plots of Edgar Allen Poe’s stories. Of course, with you and a Detective involved. In this one you have to save/protect a man who believes he has uncovered the location of Captain Kidd’s treasure. HO scenes are fun, minigames challenging, and the plot engaging. Recommend in the bundle, just for ease of purchase.

Pick it up if it's on sale. Charming little game. It's fun with only one particularly hard puzzle (a mahjong game with only one solution). There's an in-game guide if you need it. The game crashes at three points; it's the nature of old games. No progress is lost though.

Crashed three times but I did manage to complete the main game. Story is average, locks are rather nonsensical and hitboxes are small with some of the HOG items being named oddly (ex. "cone" for a pine cone.) Voice acting is the highlight, but because it's so badly recorded it's funny. A few of the voiced characters sound like they're locked in basements. The voice actors themselves did 110% acting, to the point that I laughed multiple times and grinned a lot listening to them. I would fully recommend the game if not for the crashing issue.

The plot about treasure hunt isn't nearly as interesting as the series' usual forray into murders, but the gameplay makes up for that. 8/10

Good puzzles, not so hard that you have to ask for hints all of the time. Fun!
